The
Cleveland Browns are looking for only their
second winning season since returning to the
NFL fold after a 4-year absence prompted by
the greed of former owner Art Modell.
Bookmakers don’t give them much of a chance,
setting the season win total at 6.5. The public
sees a better year than that for the revamped
Browns, driving the price for the over all the
way to -160, the furthest offside O/U of any
NFL team thus far.
Looking at this year’s
schedule, the Browns had better be a much improved
squad if they plan on winning at least seven
games and winning some money for the public.
Their division alone gives them six tough games
against the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers. In
non-divisional matchups, they must face the
Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Falcons, Bucs and
Panthers. Not an easy schedule at all. Their
easiest games come against New Orleans, Houston,
Jets, Texans and Raiders. It is going to be
tough.
The Browns spent heavily
in the offseason, acquiring a couple big name
players on both sides of the ball. There are
still many questions here, however.
With Braylan Edwards making
slow recovery from a knee injury and the injury
to C LeCharles Bentley, these Browns are going
to have a very tough season. Not to mention
the fact that Kellen Winslow Jr. only this week
practiced in pads for the first time in two
years! The decision to go with the over or the
under with Cleveland must be based upon your
faith in Charlie Frye and the gelling of the
defense. I think this team is close but play
too many other teams that are already there.
I am taking the under and the +130 price makes
it a little easier.

The Baltimore Ravens and
Coach Brian Billick head into training camp
with no injury concerns for the first time since
2003. Ray Lewis, although he has suggested a
trade might be desirable to him, will practice
for the first time since he injured his hamstring
nine months ago and all seems to be fixed. The
addition of tough QB Steve McNair, who gets
to throw to his favorite target, Derrick Mason,
from two seasons ago when they were both Titans,
should solidify the offense as long as he can
avoid injury.
Bookmakers have set the
total wins for season at eight, so what we have
to decide here is whether or not this club can
play at least .500 ball. Considering the experience
of Coach Billick, the ultimatum handed to him
by the Ravens owner to get things done differently,
McNair solidifying the offense and a defense
that rarely ranks below the top six in the league,
I think they can do it.
If what should now pass as their offense can
get them a few tough wins, something they have
not been able to do for years, the Ravens should
at least be able to get bettors a push at the
very least. One or two lucky breaks and the
over, at -140, should be money in the bank.
