The
Denver Broncos are a tough team to call. The
play of QB Jake Plummer was exemplary last season
but his playoff meltdown that led to four Broncos
turnovers, although a rarity last year, has
been a fairly consistent occurrence throughout
his career.
Will the questions that followed that poor performance
get into his head? I can’t think so. After
all, those questions have followed him everywhere
and he had what can only be described as a very
efficient 2005 season.
The winner of the AFC West
hangs in the balance of Denver’s first
three games and especially in the Week 2 home
game against the rival and improved Chiefs.
The other two games have them on the road visiting
the Rams and the Patriots in Week 3. It is very
possible that these Broncos could go 3-0 and
set the tone for the rest of the AFC, but I
think it more likely they will end up 1-2 and
in a battle to win the division. Call it a hunch,
that’s all.
Thus, with the books setting
the regular season wins total at ten, I must
go with the under here, although I am not very
sure of this pick and I would be much less surprised
to see this team get exactly ten wins on the
year. It seems as though bettors feel much the
same way with the action pretty much even and
the price set at -115 whichever way you decide
to go.
The Kansas City Chiefs,
with a shored up defense thanks to the signing
of Ty Law, are my favorites to win the AFC West
if only due to the experience they have at key
positions on both offense and now on defense.

The only questions I have
about any group of Chiefs is with their linebackers,
who drastically need to improve their play to
help this defense become something special,
which it could be. If the linebackers can pick
up their socks, the leadership of QB Green,
TE Gonzalez and the extraordinary rushing prowess
of uber-back Larry Johnson should propel this
team to a playoff appearance.
They could then win their first playoff game
since Joe Montana was at the helm under a fool
named Schottenheimer way back in 1993.
Since the posted total for the 2006 season for
the Chiefs sits at 9.5 games and I have picked
the Broncos to go under, I must go with the
over for the Chiefs. I can see this team winning
a few close ones behind their offensive leaders
and improved defensive backfield.
Eleven wins is not out of the question for this
team. With the over price at -110, the public
is slightly favoring the under for this Kansas
City squad. If you agree with John Q, you’ll
be paying -120. For
