Quarterback, Brady Quinn
threw for 319 yards and five touchdowns. Most
importantly, he had only one interception and
was cool under fire in rallying his team back
from a 37-21 deficit after three quarters. It
was that kind of effort that was missing in the
Michigan loss, and it keeps Notre Dame alive in
the national championship race.
The Michigan and Notre Dame
contest was one of many exciting games involving
teams ranked in the Top 10.
Top ranked, Ohio State beat
Penn State, 28-6. The game was just a 14-6 score
midway through the fourth quarter, but two interception
returns for touchdowns had Penn State backers
in a state of shock.
Third ranked, USC won 20-3
at Arizona, but this was also just a one touchdown
game in the fourth quarter. Trojans’ star
receiver, Dwayne Jarrett left the game with a
sprained shoulder. Jarrett looks like he could
be out 2-4 weeks.
Fourth ranked, West Virginia
needed 10 points in the 4th quarter to put away
East Carolina, 27-10. East Carolina did a great
job limiting the running game of the Mountaineers.
Heisman Trophy candidate, Steve Slaton had 78
rushing yards at just 3.3 yards per carry. Certainly
not what was expected.
Finally, sixth ranked, Michigan
and Wisconsin played a very spirited and physical
game in Ann Arbor. The teams were tied 10-10 at
halftime, but the Wolverines and the crowd were
too much for the Badgers in the second half, winning
27-13.
Looking ahead to this weekend,
Alabama is at Florida in an SEC showdown. Florida
quarterback, Chris Leak has put himself right
in contention for the Heisman. Georgia Tech is
at Virginia Tech in a game with major ACC implications.
Two other games of note are Ohio State at Iowa,
and undefeated Purdue trying to show they are
for real at Notre Dame.

Switching our focus to the
NFL, there are still eight undefeated teams heading
into tonight.
Indianapolis (3-0) was able
to hold off Jacksonville, 21-14 despite having
a number of key injuries heading into the game.
The Colts got an 82 yard punt return from Terrence
Wilkins, and 219 yards passing from Peyton Manning.
That offset the fact that the Colts got dominated
in rushing yards.
Cincinnati (3-0) got revenge
for their playoff defeat to the Steelers last
year, winning in Pittsburgh yesterday, 28-20.
The Bengals got two key turnovers in the 4th quarter
that turned the game around. The Steelers had
five turnovers overall, essentially beating themselves.
Chicago (3-0) was another
fortunate team yesterday as they got a late touchdown
after a Brad Johnson fumble to stun Minnesota,
19-16. Elsewhere in the NFC, Seattle (3-0) crushed
the Giants, 42-30 in a game that was not as close
as the score indicates.
Finally, don’t forget
about Monday Night Football. Atlanta (2-1) lost
to New Orleans (3-0) in an exciting return of
pro football to the Superdome. Atlanta had been
one of the best teams in the NFL so far, and New
Orleans is now trying to win a super bowl for
their brave city.
