Free Pick: Ohio State
(+2.5) at Texas
Ohio State is 1-0 on the
season after a 35-12 win over Northern Illinois.
The Buckeyes were led by their terrific trio on
offense that includes quarterback Troy Smith,
running back Antonio Pittman, and wide receiver
Ted Ginn Jr. Smith in particular had a standout
game that included almost 300 yards passing and
three touchdowns.
We know that OSU will carve
up competition like NIU each and every week. The
question is, how will they fare against the heavyweights
of the world like Texas? Remember, the Buckeyes
lost nine defensive starters from their 2005 team,
and like many people commented last week, Ohio
State looks slow.
The Longhorns are also 1-0
after a 56-7 dismantling of North Texas. Many
people I talk to just don’t think Mack Brown
and company can play ball without quarterback
Vince Young. Red-shirt freshman, Colt McCoy went
a long way in answering those critics last week
with 197 yards passing and three touchdown throws.
Besides the solid play of
McCoy, the Longhorns have Olympic-caliber speed
in running back, Jamaal Charles. Texas also has
a plethora of solid receivers who can get down
field on the play-action-pass. That means that
opposing defenses have to pick their poison, whether
they want to sell-out to stop the run or the pass.
Summary and Outlook
Both schools are 8-0 against
the spread (ATS) in their last eight games. Texas
is also a whopping 10-1 ATS in their last 11 home
games. Let us not forget that Texas went into
Columbus last season with just about the same
lineup, and beat Ohio State as a slight underdog.
For Texas, this is a chance
to make the statement that they are still an elite
team without Vince Young. Much talk has been made
about the giant Ohio State offensive line, but
they will be going against one of the best front
seven in all of college football.
The overall speed advantage
of Texas will be the determining factor in this
game along with home field advantage. It goes
without saying that the state of Texas lives,
eats and breaths Longhorns football.
I’m going to keep going
with Texas until they lose.
Free Pick: Texas
P.S. I also like this to
be a high scoring game as Texas is 17-5-1 in the
Over / Under in their last 23.
