Football Office Pools - Nov 30th
By James Johnson Correspondent for Wager On Football

Offshore Sportsbetting - Online Casino Gambling

What is a football office pool? A football office pool is a contest to see who is the best at picking football winners. There are different types of office pools but the most common is the one that has people picking winners against the spread. I’ll look at the different types of football office pools and give you some tips to help you become more successful if you enter any of them.

The most common type of football office pool is the point spread pool. Each week of the NFL season everyone is given all the games with the pointspreads listed. They then choose who they think will win each game against the spread. One point is awarded for each correct selection and the totals are kept throughout the NFL regular season. Prizes can be awarded for the best score every week and a grand prize is awarded for the person who selected the most winners for the entire season. Another type of football office pool that is closely related to the pointspread pool is called the confidence pool. It is the same as the pointspread pool except now everyone ranks their selections starting at #1 all the way down the list. The top selection gets the most points, the second the next most, and on down the list. This pool allows everyone to rank their selections and give greater weight to the games they really like. For example, you would rank your top selection as #1 and your worst selection at #15. The totals are tabulated based on how well your top selections did against the spread and points are given out accordingly for the week and for the season.

The newest, and quickly becoming the most popular type of football office pool, is the survivor pool. This pool can be done by picking the winner straight up or by picking the winner against the spread. It is much simpler to understand and to track. Each week everyone picks the one team that they like the best. Anyone that loses his or her pick is out of the pool. The pool continues until there is only one person left. If there were more than one person left at the end of the season they would split the pot. A rule that is sometimes put into this type of pool limits the times you can select a team. For example, let’s say you like New England and want to select them every week. The rule could say that you can only select a team up to three times. That prevents someone from riding a hot team all year long. This survivor office pool is quickly becoming the most popular because it is very easy to understand and anyone can win.

How can we enhance our chances to win one of these office pools? I’ll take the survivor football office pool for the main example. The most popular type of survivor pool is to have just the straight up winner with no pointspread. In this type of pool you want to keep yourself alive and not take many chances early in the year. Heavy favorites are a good place to start because we don’t care if they cover the spread; we just need them to win straight up. We want to especially look at the heavily favored home teams. If major upsets are going to happen they usually happen when the power team is on the road. Later in the season, if we are still alive, we can do a little more thinking and handicapping, but early in the season we just want to take the power teams, especially at home. We have to remember that the goal is to survive and move on. If we are alive late in the season then we can do some things. Some people will avoid using the same team three times in a row thinking that they will then have only poor teams to choose from later in the season. Again, remember the goal is to survive. We worry about one week at a time and if the best power team is available, we take them.

Another type of football office pool is also very simple to understand and has been around a long time. It is the pool that is based strictly on number squares and gives out prizes based on the quarter, halftime, and final scores. It is very straightforward, as all you are concerned about is the score at the end of the 1st quarter, the halftime score, the end of the third quarter score, and the final score. You usually get one number for each team and put it together to see if you are a winner. For example, if New England was leading 17-13 over Carolina at the half you would want your Patriots number to be 7 and your Panthers number to be three. That would make you a winner. These types of number square pools are quite common in Championship games like the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, NBA Championship, etc.

Whatever type of office pool you get involved in I hope that you are able to make it a success. Hopefully you can keep in mind some of these tips and make your next football office pool a winning one.

This Just In

TRENTON, N.J. - An Assembly committee will hold hearings next week on a bill to legalize sports betting, but lawmakers need to overcome several hurdles before wagers can be placed on games.

Federal law bans sports wagering in most states. However, lawmakers here are pushing sports betting as a way to stave off a budget deficit and to help Atlantic City casinos fight competition.

Assembly Speaker Albio Sires, D-Hudson, now says he backs sports betting as a way to help ease what may be a $4 billion gap in the next state budget."Sports betting is a very intriguing idea that could help solidify the financial standing of Atlantic City's casinos while producing a new revenue stream for state programs that help seniors and residents with disabilities," said Sires in a statement issued Wednesday.

Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey is reviewing the sports betting bill and has not yet taken a position on it, a spokeswoman told The Star-Ledger of Newark for its Thursday editions.Codey also has not directed the attorney general to challenge a federal law that would ban the state from legalizing sports betting, the newspaper reported.

The bill backed by Sires would raise $92.5 million for various programs by taxing an estimated $1 billion in bets. Bets would be made in person at a casino and no wagers would be allowed on college or other amateur sports events.Voters would be asked to approve sports gambling in a referendum, under the measure. The federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act bars all but four states from running legal bookmaking operations.Federal law allows sports betting in Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana, but only the first two states offer it. Nevada has full-service sports books, while Oregon has a state-run pro football pool during the season.

The federal government gave New Jersey the opportunity to legalize sports betting in 1994, but proponents could not gather enough support and the issue never made it to the ballot for voter approval.

Supporters say the state could overturn the federal law and they are urging the attorney general to contest the issue.

Opponents say sports betting would increase problems with gambling. In May, the Assembly Tourism and Gaming Committee held a hearing on the issue that drew opposition from the NFL whose representatives argued that increased sports betting would cause some to fear games would be fixed.Last year nearly $2 billion was bet on sports in Nevada.

Now some lawmakers believe the increased revenue from sports betting would boost state coffers and make Atlantic City more attractive as a tourist destination. Casinos worry that increased competition from nearby states, including those that offer slot machines at racetracks, will cut revenues.
