MISSION STATEMENT
The Order of Sparta, in its support and representation of
all intercollegiate sports at San José State University,
is committed to promoting the winning tradition of Spartan
Athletics and encouraging the continued environment of integrity
and high academic standards for all student-athletes.
CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM
Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success
CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS
As the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at San Jose
State University, we believe our student-athletes deserve
all of our time, experience, wisdom and resources to become
the best they can be, both in the classroom as well as on
the field of competition. In order for us to achieve this
goal, we have joined forces with the NCAA to provide them
with the CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS Program.
The CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS Program is dedicated to providing
the best growth opportunity for our student-athletes by
committing our resources to five major areas: Academic Excellence,
Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Community Service
and Career Development.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics is committed
to providing our student-athletes with the proper resources
necessary to insure their growth and development while maintaining
the highest levels of integrity, equity, pride, and tradition.
Our main purpose and goal is to prepare them for the ultimate
competitive challenge: life after graduation.
SJSU Sports Hall of Fame
The Order of Sparta assumes sole responsibility for the
San José State University Sports Hall of Fame, including
the sponsorship of the annual banquet and creating the procedures
and criteria for induction into the Hall of Fame. The Order
represents all sports within the Division of Intercollegiate
Athletics. Henceforth, no team or individual associated
with Spartan Athletics will be recognized as a member of
the San José State University Sports Hall of Fame
unless inducted through the criteria and procedures established
by the leadership of The Order of Sparta.
Most Famous Alum
2003 San Jose State University Sports Hall of Fame biographies
JEFF GARCIA was a quarterback on the 1991 through 1993
football teams. A transfer from nearby Gavilan College,
he excelled at the position even though he had four different
head coaches. His first season with the Spartans, 1990,
was spent as a redshirt. As a sophomore in 1991, he shared
the starting job, but played in enough games to finish third
nationally in passing efficiency. Garcia, a 1992 honorable
mention All-American, holds the school career record for
total offense and is third on the career list for career
passing yards, number of completions and passing efficiency.
The 1994 "Outstanding Offense Player" at the East-West
Shrine Game signed a free agent contract with the Calgary
Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. Garcia threw
for 16,449 yards and 111 touchdowns in five seasons. He
was a four-time CFL all-star and was named the "Most
Valuable Player" of the 1998 Grey Cup leading the Stampeders
to victory. Garcia joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1999
as a free agent and became a starter in his first season.
He has taken the 49ers to the playoffs in each of the last
two seasons and is a three-time Pro Bowl selection.
Spartan Foundation
The Spartan Foundation is the fund raising arm of the San
Jose State University Athletics Department. As its primary
objective, the Spartan Foundation provides scholarship support
for all of San Jose State's NCAA Division I athletic teams.
Over 350 student-athletes benefit from the funds provided
by the Spartan Foundation and its programs.
Through newsletters, tailgate parties, auctions, golf tournaments
and other special events, the Spartan Foundation provides
an opportunity for alumni, friends, parents and boosters
to become involved with San Jose State athletics. The Spartan
Foundation Board of Directors provides guidance consistent
with the goals and policies of San Jose State, the Division
of Intercollegiate Athletics, conference affiliations, and
the National Collegiate Athletics Association. Without scholarships,
most student-athletes would not have the opportunity to
attend the university of their choice and participate in
quality and competitive athletics programs. San Jose State
is committed to providing that opportunity to over 300 student-athletes
by providing over $2,500,000 in scholarship assistance.
No state funds or student body monies are allotted for scholarship
support.
With a gift to the Spartan Foundation, you can assist in
underwriting that cost and know you are helping our young
men and women pursue excellence, both in the classroom and
on the athletic playing fields. San Jose State has made
a commitment, our student-athletes have made a commitment.
Quarterback Club
Fans of the San Jose State football team can join the Quarterback
Club to help support the program and have a good time with
other Spartan fans.
Quarterback Club President Joe Griego looks forward to
this football season with much optimism and invites Spartan
fans to join him on Thursday nights for the QBC dinner and
program to discuss the upcoming games.
"Coach Hill had another banner year in recruiting,
going up against the big school, " said Griego. "The
future for SJSU football looks rosy."
The location for the seven meetings is Lou's Village Restaurant.
By continuing to invite football coaches, student-athletes
and interesting speakers, the program offers a keen insight
to the upcoming games.
If you would like to join, please download the application
and mail it back to the Spartan Foundation. QBC Membership
is $50 and dinner is an additional $25.00 per member. All
proceeds benefit the Spartan Football team.
