NCAA Football Team History
- Louisville Cardinals - History

Alma Mater
- by Jimmy Powell and John Young

We thy loyal sons now stand
To sing thy highest praise.
With deepest rev'rence in our hearts
For these our college days.
Thy honor true we all defend
'Tis known we love thee well.
Our thought for years to come will be
Of thee our U of L!

"Fight! U of L"
- by R.B. Griffin

Fight now for victory and show them
How we sure will win this game
Fight on you Card'nals and prove to them
That we deserve our fame.
Rah, Rah, Rah!
Roll up the score now and beat the foe
So we can give a yell
With a FIGHT! give them all you've got
For we are with you U of L.

"All Hail U of L"
- by Alan Greener

All hail to thee our U of L
As we stand up for her fame.
All hail to thee our U of L
As we fight to win this game.
Sing praises for a victory,
We wish our heroes well.
All hail the Cardinal Spirit.
All hail our U of L!
GO CARDS!

Cardinal Bird

The University of Louisville's athletic symbol, chosen sometime after 1913, is a Cardinal. The Cardinal bird was chosen to give U of L statewide identification, since the Cardinal is the state bird of Kentucky.

School Colors

The school colors, cardinal red, black and white, were adopted at the suggestion of Mrs. John L. Patterson.

Recent Bowl Games -
In the only bowl game of the 2000 season that featured a pair of conference champions, the Mountain West champs - the Colorado State Rams bulled their way to a 22-17 win over the Louisville Cardinals, Conference USA champions.

More than 25,000 U of L fans braved wind chills in the single digits and saw the Cardinals jump out to a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Dave Ragone connected with little-used wide reeiver Damien
Dorsey on a 58-yard scoring play and got tree more from the right foot of placekicker Nate Smith.

The Rams battled back late in the first half getting a pair of touchdowns
on the ground from Cecil Sapp and Frank Rice. Sapp would go
on to earn game MVP honors after a 160-yard performance.
Armed with a 16-10 halftime lead, the Rams would bump the score to
19-10 after the second of three C.W. Hurst field goals, a 21-yarder early
in the third quarter.

U of L pulled within two at 19-17 when Ragone connected with
Deion Branch on a 14-yard scoring play with 13:35 left in the game.
For the day, Ragone completed 24 of 37 throws for 321 yards in
winds up to 30 miles per hour. Branch set a Liberty Bowl record with 10
receptions for 170 yards and a score.

The Cards outgained CSU 397-315 in total offense but proved to be
their own worst enemy by fumbling three times on the bitterly frigid
afternoon.

CSU closed the scoring with a 32-yard Hurst field goal with 7:43
remaining as the Cardinals were forced to play the final 15 minutes into
the teeth of the howling winds.

The No. 23-ranked Cardinals made an impressive statement to cap one of the most successful seasons in school history with a 22-10 pounding of No. 19 Brigham Young in the AXA Liberty Bowl.

The Louisville defense, ranked 10th in the nation in points allowed, held the nationís highest scoring offense (46.8 points per game) 14 points below its previous low. So it was only fitting that the Cardinal defense came up with
the biggest play of the game. Zek Parker had returned the opening kickoff 70 yards to the BYU 22 to set up the Cardsí first score, with Henry Miller carrying it in from the one yard line.

Then the Cougars scored on a trick play, a lateral to lineman Dustin
Rykert for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 7-7 midway through the second
quarter. With just 2:18 remaining in the first half, BYU had the ball on its
own 40 on a fourth-and-five. The Cougars faked the punt, but the Cards
were ready.

Linebacker Rod Day stopped Ned Stearns for no gain and the momentum sparked the Louisville offense. After U of L took over, Dave Ragone completed two passes to tight end Ronnie Ghent, the second of which put the Cards a half-yard from the goal line. Two plays later Ragone hit tight end Chip Mattingly to make it 14-7 at the half. The Cards were still in control after a BYU field goal on their opening
drive of the second half. Deion Branch had three catches in the next Cardinal drive, including a 34-yard touchdown that put Louisville ahead 21-10 with 4:15 remaining in the third quarter. Junior safety Curry Burns had one of the best games of his career with nine solo tackles and two pass break-ups. He capped it with an interception and a 29-yard return to the Louisville 46. That set up the score that broke BYUís back. The Cards held BYU to a season-low 276 yards and forced three
turnovers. Ragone spread the ball effectively and capitalized on big plays by the defense. The victory was Smithís first in a bowl game after four losses.
