Hawaii Warriors Football History

Aloha Stadium - Home of the Warriors

Overlooking the turquoise waters of Pearl Harbor lays the home of the University of Hawai‘i’s football team, Aloha Stadium. The 50,000-seat facility has been home to the state of Hawai‘i’s only Division I football team for the past 29 years.

In 1999, Aloha Stadium was the venue for June Jones as he took over the helm of the Warrior football team and sparked the best turnaround in NCAA football history, which was capped by a victory over Oregon State in the Jeep Oahu Bowl. The Warriors appeared in their third bowl game under Jones last year as they beat the University of Houston in triple-overtime in front of a national audience.

In 2003, Aloha Stadium received a face-lift when the aging AstroTurf surface was stripped and replaced with state-of-the-art, NFL-endorsed FieldTurf, which may reduce the number of turf-related injuries.

UH made its stadium debut on Sept. 13, 1975, against Texas A&I. The team and fans needed to make adjustments because the stadium stands 10 miles from the Manoa campus, while the old Honolulu Stadium was just a half-mile away.

Three seasons after picking up their first win in November 1975, Hawai‘i played in front of its first sold-out crowd, as they lost the 1978 season-finale to USC, 21-5.

Through the 1980s, fans swarmed to Aloha Stadium as the Warriors consistently averaged more than 40,000 spectators per game. Nearly a half-million fans walked through the turnstiles in 1989, not including a sellout crowd in UH’s first postseason bowl game, a 33-13 loss to Michigan State in the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl.

The 1992 season, in which the Warriors claimed its first Western Athletic Conference Championship, was witnessed by an average of 44,432 fans per game. The number declined during the mid-1990s, along with the team’s success. But since Jones took over, Hawai‘i has made Aloha Stadium a true home-field advantage once again.

UH Alma Mater

In green Manoa Valley our Alma Mater Stands,
Where mountain winds and showers refresh her fertile lands;
The flag of freedom beckons above her shining walls,
To larger truth and service our Alma Mater calls.

Hawai'i, we have gathered within thy wide-flung doors,
As sons and daughters claiming thy freely offered stores;
Our loyal praise we tender, and pledge to hold thy aim,
Till ocean's far horizons shall hear thy honored name.

UH Fight Song

Here's to our dear Hawaii
Here's to our Green and White
Here's to our Alma Mater
Here's to the team with fight
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Here's to old warriors calling
Here's to old battles won
Here's to Hawaii's victory
Here's to each valiant son.

Football Locker Room

The Shannon Shea Smith football locker room is located next to the men’s equipment room and covers nearly 8,000 square feet.

The air-conditioned facility is equipped with five meeting rooms, a trophy room, lounge, lobby, built-in display case, five additional showers and a fiberglass skylight roof. It houses 126 professional-style lockers, giving each player 38.5 cubic feet of personal storage.

The Shannon Shea Smith locker room was officially named Aug. 29, 1999, after the valiant former Warrior who gave his life to save the life of young Cody vonAppen, son of former Warrior head coach Fred vonAppen. The heroic deed occurred March 29, 1997, at the Waipahe‘e Slippery Slide on Kauai.

The NCAA acknowledged Smith’s bravery and courage by awarding him with the NCAA Award of Valor Jan. 11, 1998, in Atlanta. Smith was only the seventh individual to ever receive the prestigious distinction.

Smith’s locker remains adorned with a lei and decorated with football gear to remind each player of the unselfish sacrifice and courage of their fellow comrade.

FOOTBALL PROMOTIONS

‘Family Zone’ To Debut At 2004 UH Football Games

Non-Alcohol Section Features Activities, Giveaways, Contests for Kids

A “Family Zone” has been created for the 2004 University of Hawai‘i football
season to cater to individuals who prefer to watch the Warriors in a non-alcohol,
family-oriented atmosphere, Athletics Director Herman Frazier announced today.
The zone will feature activities, giveaways, and contests for kids.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer this familyoriented game experience to our football fans,” Frazier said. “This will allow individuals the option to
sit in a non-alcohol atmosphere and enjoy fun-filled activities geared toward kids.
“We want to provide a positive game experience for all of our fans and we feel that the ‘Family Zone’ fills a need. The management team at Aloha Stadium has been very supportive of this initiative and we truly appreciate their assistance.”

The lower (orange) level of sections V and VV, located in the north end zone, will form the “Family Zone.” Additional “Family Zones” will be created if
the initial area fills up.

Did You Know?

The Warriors have five quarterbacks on the roster to address the loss of NCAA recordsetting quarterback Timmy Chang. Jeffrey Rhode and Kainoa Akina, the only two with game experience, have combined for 116 yards on 9-of-22 career attempts.

Since his arrival in 1999, head coach June Jones’ teams have broken 300 school records and four NCAA records. Jones has coached three All-Americans, 44 all-WAC players and 13 all-academic honorees.

Jones has posted five winning seasons in six years with the Warriors. He has reached the nine-win mark in four seasons, including a personal-best 10 wins in 2002, and has 48 wins in six seasons. In the six seasons prior to his arrival, the Warriors were 18-53-1.

Four of the six bowl invitations in Warrior football history have come under Jones. Jones has led the Warriors to victory in three of those games. . The Warriors will open the 2005 season against two-time defending champion USC on Sept. 3 without starting quarterback Timmy Chang and starting slot receiver Chad Owens. The duo accounted for 31 percent of the team’s scoring in 2004. . Slot receiver Nate Ilaoa, who sat out last season recovering from knee surgery, will make an attempt at running back this spring in a move to help make-up for the loss of starters West Keliikipi and Michael Brewster. The two combined for 1,058 yards on 185 carries, and 13 touchdowns a year ago.
