Fresno State Athletics Department Mission Statement

April 10, 2002

The Department of Athletics complements the academic mission of the University by offering students an athletics experience of high quality through broad based, competitive sports programs for both men and women. To provide such an experience, the department is committed to integrity and excellence in both athletics and academics through a comprehensive academic support system.

As part of the collegiate experience, athletics competition provides student-athletes with a wide range of opportunities to enhance their intellectual, physical, personal and social development. The department's goal is to help student-athletes develop skills, attain graduation, become productive citizens and succeed in life.

In the interest of gender equity and ethnic diversity, the department intends to stand as a leader in providing opportunities for all student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff, complemented by facilities to showcase their talents and abilities.

Since competition is the trademark of intercollegiate athletics, the Department of Athletics is committed to achieving the full potential of each team and each athlete while maintaining compliance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Western Athletic Conference, the National Collegiate Athletics Association for Division IA membership, and the rules and procedures established by California State University, Fresno. Dedication to athletics and academic excellence will be reflected in the performance of all University teams.

As the major public university in the San Joaquin Valley, the department strives to develop strong local, regional and national recognition for its teams and foster a sense of community among our constituencies, i.e., the student body, the faculty and staff, the alumni and the general public. This recognition will be achieved not only through outstanding athletics performance, but also through the civility with which we conduct ourselves both on and off the playing field.

Bulldog Stadium

Bulldog Stadium is considered one of the most complete stadiums in the Western Athletic Conference. The stadium seats 41,031 and features 22 sky suites. The Bulldogs have sold out 12 of the last 17 games, and during that time have averaged 41,101 fans per game.

Fresno State football teams have combined to post one of the NCAAÕs most impressive home win-loss records since they first began playing at Bulldog Stadium at the end of the 1980 season.

Entering the 2003 campaign, Fresno State teams have won 81 percent of their games on Bulldog StadiumÕs natural grass surface, posting a 21-year win-loss mark of 113-26-2 (.809). Bulldog teams are 76-14-1 (.841) in their last 85 games and since 1997, when Pat Hill took over as head coach, Fresno State is 29-5 (.853) and have won 25 of its last 27 at home.
Bulldog Stadium was named the 23rd-best college football facility in the nation by CBSSportsline.com in the summer of 2003.

The Red Wave

Loud and proud, Fresno State's loyal and enthusiastic fans have made themselves heard nationwide - by national publications which have chronicled the Bulldogs' fantastic fan following, and by others in the media, who have referred to the noise level generated by the Red Wave as "deafening."

It's that kind of fan support that has helped put Fresno State athletics on the map, and the kind of support that resulted in record-breaking attendance at Bulldog Stadium for home football games. It's the Red Wave that packs the 16,116-seat Save Mart Center for basketball games. Bulldog fans also invade Beiden Field (baseball), Bulldog Diamond (softball), the Wathen Tennis Center (tennis) and Warmerdam Field (track and field) by the thousands for every home event.

Fresno State Spirit Squad

The Fresno State spirit squad is composed of co-ed cheerleaders and mascot Timeout, each with different responsibilities but working together as one team.

The spirit squad performs stunts and leads the crowd in cheers, while also performing to the music of the Fresno State Marching Band or recorded music for halftime shows at men's and women's basketball games and volleyball matches. With the help of Fresno State's official mascot, Timeout, the spirit squad helps keep the crowd energized and has become a visible and spirited tradition at Bulldog home events.

In the last four years alone, the spirit squad has performed in front of Red Wave crowds at three Silicon Valley Football Classic bowl games, the 2004 McCaffrey WAC Tournament, first and second rounds of the 2001 NCAA Tournament for men's basketball, first and second rounds of the 2003 WNIT and the wrestling team's record-setting dual match against Iowa State in 2004 at the Save Mart Center.

The Fresno State Athletics Department provides financial and administrative support of the spirit squad.

Nickname and Colors

How did Fresno State arrive at the nickname, Bulldogs, or the colors, Cardinal and Blue? Late in their initial 1921 season, student body president Warren Moody and friends were continually greeted outside the main campus building by a white bulldog. The dog adopted the group and they decided to make him the mascot. Arids Walker made the motion to adopt "Bulldogs" as the official nickname in a student body meeting. It was on November 21, 1921, that the Morning Republican first referred to Fresno State as the "Bulldogs".

The colors evolved out of an argument by women from Fresno Normal School and men from Fresno Junior College. The women were seeking blue and white to the men's red and white. A compromise was struck with the school adopting red and blue with a red later changed to Cardinal.

The Meaning of the V

Fresno State's pride for the San Joaquin Valley is displayed in the form of a green "V" on the back of their football helmets.

Football Home

When Pat Hill became Fresno State's head coach prior to the 1997 season, he wanted to reinvigorate San Joaquin Valley pride in the Bulldogs. Because Fresno State is the only Division I football program in the Valley, a 250-mile stretch in California's midsection from Bakersfield to Modesto, Hill wanted to make the Bulldogs the "Green Bay Packers of college football." As Coach Hill often states, Fresno State is not only representing Fresno, its representing the entire Valley.

This representation of the San Joaquin Valley is displayed in the form of a green "V" on the back of the Bulldogs' helmets. The green in the "V" is a symbol to the agricultural community of the Central Valley, which is the world's richest agricultural area in export dollars.

"The people of this Valley are of vital importance to the success of this football program," said Hill. "They help us fund the program, they give us unparalleled support, and they are going to be the big reason we take this program to a level where we are consistently in the Top 25."

Hill has also shown his commitment to the Valley in recruiting -- 45 of the Bulldogs' 104 players (43 percent) are from the San Joaquin Valley.
