Advocates for a playoff system
to be instated in NCAA division 1 football won’t
be happy that there will be yet another bowl
game on board this season to be held in Houston,
Texas. This Bowl will take the place of the
former Houston Bowl and will feature a Big East
team against a Big 12 opponent. I’ll bet
your jumping out of your seat with the news.
The BCS was supposed to be college football’s
panacea, and already we have seen plenty of
holes. For example, although Utah received a
BCS bid, non-football powerhouses and smaller
schools have no chance at all to contend for
a national title even if they are undefeated
as their strength of schedule causes them to
suffer in BCS rankings.
It’s time to hold playoffs. College sports
are supposed to be the highest quality of athletes
competing in a pure environment and yet domineeringly
in football, they have succumbed to corporate
takeover. So because of money we have been left
wondering in countless years who would have
won if Miami and Michigan would have played.
It is naïve to think that a playoff system
couldn’t be every bit as lucrative. Look
how many meaningless bowl games are played between
2 teams who nobody cares about in stadiums with
thousands of empty seats. Corporations could
still sponsor individual games or rounds and
fans would be way more excited to see if a MAC
team will be able to hang with a Big 10 school.
A playoff system would be the sports media’s
dream as many stories would surface, and there
would be a lot more interesting matchups than
just the 2 or 3 that there are most years. Picture
Match Madness in December. This would also get
rid of the big month long layoff there is before
the big bowl games are played which kills more
of the buzz than it creates. Most importantly,
all the politics aside, and I know I haven’t
touched on half of them, we would have 1 national
champion with no argument (that should be reason
enough).
