BODOG heisman
trophy NCAA gambling: NCAA FOOTBALL Preview: Heisman
Race is On
The X Factors.
These are players who can singlehandedly
change the game - and your wager - in the blink
of an eye. Players who give defensive coordinators
the kind of headaches Tom Cruise's vitamins couldn't
cure. These Heisman Trophy candidates are the
future superstars you should always put money
on in a head-to-head prop. Or the ones you should
pray don't show up to the game when you bet against
their team.
If you sleep on these game-changing
individuals, you will curse every college football
segment SportsCenter has to offer. So make sure
you do your homework and keep an eye on these
X Factors.
Ted Ginn Jr., WR (Ohio
State)
If speed kills, then Ted Ginn Jr.
should be serving 25 to life. This 6-foot, 175-pound
CB/KR (who moonlighted as a WR) put on a versatile
freshman display not seen since Deion Sanders
suited up for Florida State.
|
Ginn first
put fear into defenders on special teams,
shocking the nation with a 25.6 yards-per-return
average and four TDs on just 15 punt returns.
But when he got inserted into the offense,
he became a one-man wrecking crew, playing
every offensive position except waterboy.
|
Teddy was so deadly Buckeyes coach
Jim Tressel has given him his own formation, so
kiss your bet goodbye when the "shot-Ginn
Formation" hits the field.
Reggie Bush, RB (USC)
Put this Trojan horse on any other
squad in the country and he'd have Heisman checked
off on his resume.
Playing for a school with enough
talent to give the San Francisco 49ers a run for
their money, Reggie Bush still had opposing defenses
designing different schemes to shut him down.
It didn't work. Reggie rushed for 908 yards on
143 carries (6.3 average) with six TDs and caught
43 passes for 509 yards with seven scores.
With his uncanny combo of
speed and quickness, you put this man on the 40-yard
line and he'll accelerate from 0-to-end zone in
4.3 seconds. Defenses better have their ankle
tape on tight.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
With two national titles and
a Heisman under his belt, if you don't know who
QB Matt Leinart is by now, you'll recognize when
he dissects defenses like a cow eye in biology
class. Throwing for 3,556 yards while completing
63.4 percent of his passes, Leinart had Pac-10
opponents praying to the football gods for him
to jump to the NFL.
|
Unfortunately,
he's back and poised to make your betting
nightmares a reality if you dare wager against
him. If he brings it like he did last season
he could become the first double-Heisman
winner since Archie Griffin pounded the
rock for Ohio State. They may even start
calling the "Heisman" the "Leinart".
|
Adrian Peterson, RB (Oklahoma)
AKA: A.D.
Definition: All-Day.
|
This true freshman
burned a hole through defensive lines by
running over them all day long. He set a
school record by poppin' and stoppin' for
1,925 yards on the field all while still
trying to figure out where his classes were
on campus. |
Some observers feel Peterson
may slow down since half the Sooners' team from
last year made the jump to the NFL, but those
critics will be eating their words when A.D. leaves
a cloud of dust toward another Heisman nomination.
Vince Young, QB (Texas)
Someone once said three things
are guaranteed in life: death, taxes and Texas
QB Vince Young. Fall for a pump fake against Vince
and he may disappear like Kaiser Soze, as he's
got speed most running backs envy. Don't think
he guarantees points? Ask the mighty Maize and
Blue how they felt after last year's Rose Bowl.
Young made the Wolverines of Michigan look like
the Chippewas of Central Michigan, putting on
a showcase by running for four touchdowns and
throwing for one. If Vince starts throwing like
he runs this season, no elaborate college defense
may be able to contain him.
Chad Henne, QB (Michigan)
Like any seasoned college vet,
Henne was precise, cool under pressure, and a
leader in the huddle last season. Thing is, the
boy was only a freshman. Throwing for 2,743 yards
and 25 TDs, Henne became the first true freshman
to lead a team to a Big Ten championship (NB -
it was a co-championship with Iowa). If he keeps
improving, he could put another first on the Michigan
history books. How about the first Wolverine QB
to win the Heisman?
Marcus Vick, QB (Virginia
Tech)
Vick may have 99 problems, but
playing football ain't one. Despite missing the
entire 2004 season for some - ahem - illegal activities,
Vick is still sick. Some scouts say Vick has legs
like Vince Young and an arm like Matt Leinart.
That assessment shouldn't be a surprise considering
he's Michael Vick's brother.
Gerald Riggs, RB (Tennessee)
To put it simply, Riggs is a machine.
He combined speed, footwork, vision and pure power
to put up 1,107 yards rushing as a backup. If
you need an all-purpose vehicle to control the
clock and pound the D-Line, none come better in
college football. Riggs' wheels never stop spinnin',
so keep a close eye on this "hatch back",
cause once he kicks it into overdrive he'll be
taking Tennessee on an all-terrain ride to the
end zone. DVD player excluded.
