Reggie Bush, welcome to Houston.
The USC running back will be earning his paycheck
in the Lone Star state thanks to the Texans
basically throwing a game to the 49ers. The
final score was 20-17 in overtime, but it was
almost laughable watching two teams doing everything
they could to lose the game.
Regarding the AFC playoff picture,
things went pretty much according to plan.
Pittsburgh had a little more
trouble than anticipated, but still dispatched
Detroit, 35-21. Quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger
surprisingly had two interceptions and no touchdowns,
while Detroit’s Joey Harrington had three
touchdowns and no picks. The win gave Pittsburgh
the 6th playoff seed in the AFC.
Pittsburgh’s win made Kansas
City’s 37-3 win over Cincinnati meaningless.
The Chiefs are out of the playoffs and will
try to rebound next year without their coach,
Dick Vermeil who retired after the game.
Even with their loss, Cincinnati
retained the 3rd seed in the AFC and will face
Pittsburgh in the first round. That is because
the Patriots also lost, to Miami, 28-26. New
England will host Jacksonville next weekend.
In the Patriots game, quarterback
Tom Brady and the rest of the starters only
played a quarter. Coach Bill Belichick inserted
third stringer Matt Cassel for the rest of the
game instead of backup Doug Flutie. Later in
the 4th quarter, Belichick allowed Flutie to
do a drop-kick for an extra point, the first
successful one since 1941.
When the Patriots scored a touchdown
late to cut the lead to two points, the camera
pointed to Belichick who looked visibly angry.
It is safe to say the Patriots coach was not
upset that his team eventually lost, as they
now get to avoid a hot Pittsburgh team that
knows how to play in the cold weather.
In the NFC playoff picture, Tampa
Bay’s 27-13 win over New Orleans gave
them the NFC South division crown. They will
host Joe Gibb’s Washington team, who earned
their way in with a 31-20 victory at Philadelphia.
The Giants will host Carolina
in the other playoff game next week. Carolina
demolished Atlanta 44-11 to ensure their spot.
The Giants clinched the NFC East division on
Saturday Night with a 30-21 win over Oakland.
The Raiders spoiled a 331 yard passing effort
from Kerry Collins and let the Giants’
Tiki Barber scamper for 203 yards on the ground.
From a betting perspective, the
game was even more painful for Raiders’
fans. Trailing by nine points, Oakland had first
and goal from the Giants one yard line with
over three minutes left. Oakland got stuffed
on three straight running plays, and unsuccessfully
went for it on fourth down instead of kicking
the field goal that would have covered the spread.
Overall for the week, it was
a fairly even split for the favorites and underdogs
at 8-7-1.
