Bet
Now: Southern Miss (+16.5) at Arkansas State
(Note: The “New Orleans”
Bowl is being played in Lafayette, Louisiana
due to Hurricane Katrina.) Southern Miss is
the defending champion of this game, having
defeated North Texas of the Sun Belt Conference,
31-10 last year.
Arkansas State is a school that
not too many people know about. Their most famous
alumni may be basketball player, Arthur Agee
from the movie, “Hoop Dreams.” This
is their first trip to a bowl game as a Division
I school.
The Arkansas State football team
is 6-5 overall for the year, and 5-2 in the
Sun Belt Conference. Louisiana Lafayette and
Louisiana Monroe were also 5-2 in the Sun Belt,
but Arkansas State gets the bowl appearance.
Arkansas State’s non-conference
schedule included a 44-17 home loss to Missouri,
a 20-10 loss at Oklahoma State, and 38-10 loss
at Army. Only Missouri in that group will be
represented in a bowl game, and it gives a pretty
good indicator of their performance against
a higher level of competition.
Arkansas State’s best chance
to make this game close is to run the ball with
Antonio Warren and Shermar Bracey. Those two
combined for over 1,700 yards on the ground,
and using them early and often will eat up clock,
and hopefully keep them in the game.
Southern Miss was 6-5 on the
year, and 5-3 in Conference USA East. It has
been a long and difficult season for them, as
they had a couple of games postponed, and had
to temporarily move practice facilities due
to Katrina.
Southern Miss’ offense
is led by quarterback Dustin Almond, who has
21 touchdown passes on the season. He will attack
the Arkansas State secondary and should get
his team to score at least 30 points. The question
here is whether the Southern Miss defense can
hold State to around two touchdowns, which will
be necessary to get the cover.
It is hard to get excited about
two teams with a 6-5 record, but you know the
old saying, “if it wasn’t worth
watching, it wouldn’t be on tv.”
This game in on ESPN at 8:00 EST, so if it is
good enough for them, it is good enough for
me. Southern Miss is the better team in almost
all facets of the game, and that should be good
enough for a three touchdown win.

Prediction - Pick: Southern Miss
