MONDAY NIGHT PICKS

Oh to be a fly on the wall in
the offices of the Monday Night Football executives.
Last week, the “MNF” game featured
a Philadelphia team out of the playoff race,
suffering a 42-0 loss against Seattle. This
week, they have the 3-9 Saints at Atlanta in
a game that was predicted to have playoff ramifications
for both teams.
Bet
Now: New Orleans (+10.5) at Atlanta
The final two Monday night games
are both clunkers, with Green Bay at Baltimore
and New England at the Jets. That is not to
say that the schedule maker should get the Donald
Trump, “you’re fired” treatment.
There have been a number of exciting Monday
night games this year, it just so happens that
it is ending on a whimper.
On a more positive note, this
game does have some exciting aspects to it.
Atlanta is 7-5 on the year, and they desperately
need a win to stay in the playoff chase. The
Falcons currently sit 1/2 game behind Minnesota
and Dallas for the NFC Wild Card.
The Falcons game plan against
New Orleans will be to run them into submission.
Atlanta has the number one rushing offense in
the NFL, while New Orleans’ defense is
28th against the run. Atlanta’s rushing
numbers are bolstered by having a running quarterback
like Michael Vick, and anything less than 200
yards on the ground would be a disappointment.
New Orleans is 3-9 on the year.
They will attempt to have success running the
ball in this game, but that will be unlikely.
That means the burden will fall to quarterback,
Aaron Brooks, who is about as streaky a quarterback
as they get.
Brooks is capable of throwing
four interceptions like he did last week, or
having a 300 yard game. Atlanta’s secondary
has been vulnerable this year, so chucking the
ball up is the Saints only hope to stay in this
game.
One bright spot for New Orleans
is that they are still playing hard. They played
tough last week in a 10-3 loss to Tampa Bay,
and their last four games have all been decided
by a touchdown or less. That is impressive for
a team that has basically been vagabonds since
Hurricane Katrina hit.
Atlanta is favored by 10.5 points
in this game. That line is obviously tempting
for New Orleans if you think they can keep it
somewhat close. The opinion here is that Atlanta
needs this game way too badly for that to happen,
and they will come out on fire after last weeks
embarrassing loss to Carolina.
Pick: Atlanta
