"THE EDGE"
It might say December on your
calendar, and there might even be snow on the
ground depending on where you live, but college
football’s season is just starting to
get hot. Starting with Louisiana Tech and Fresno
State tonight, there are 11 games on the docket
through the weekend.
In Jacksonville, the ACC will
play its first ever title game when Virginia
Tech meets up with struggling Florida State.
In Atlanta, Georgia and LSU will play in the
SEC championship game, as they did in 2003.
The two most intriguing match-ups though are
USC/UCLA and Texas/Colorado, which will both
directly impact the national championship game.
College
Football Picks - Bet Now: UCLA (+21) at USC
At the end of this current NFL
season, there are going to be a number of head
coaching vacancies. Most, if not all of the
teams, will have USC Coach Pete Carroll near
the top of their wish list. You see, Carroll
and his Trojans are two games away from becoming
the first Division 1-A team in modern history
to win three straight national championships.
That is not to say that Carroll
leaving for the NFL is a lock, far from it.
Carroll already had two failed stints as a pro
coach with the Jets and the Patriots. He would
demand control over personnel, a salary north
of $5 million per year, and even then would
probably turn down any offer knowing that his
laid back style and persona are a better fit
for the student athlete.
Of course, Carroll’s coaching
status is a topic better left for another day,
as the quest for history begins. USC is 11-0,
and second in the nation in scoring at over
48 points per game. These guys are licking their
chops thinking about how many points they can
put up against a UCLA defense that is giving
30.5 points per game.
When you consider the talent
USC has at the skill positions, it is hard to
imagine that any team outside of the Indianapolis
Colts could score more. The Trojans have two
Heisman trophy candidates in Matt Leinart and
Reggie Bush, who could also be the first two
picks in the NFL draft. They also have running
back, Lendale White, who could win the Heisman
trophy next year.
The chink in USC’s armor
this year has been their defense. Suffering
from several losses to the professional ranks,
the Trojans’ “D” is giving
up over 21 points per game. Compare that to
last year, when the defense gave up an average
of 13 points, and you can see why some feel
the Trojans are more vulnerable than in recent
years.
UCLA (9-1) has its own dynamic
duo in quarterback Drew Olson and running back
Maurice Drew. Those two players anchor an offense
that is 5th in the nation in scoring at 40 points
per game. Olson also leads the country in quarterback
rating, and his 25 touchdowns versus three interceptions
betters Leinart in both categories.
Drew’s rushing averages
are down from last year with 816 total yards,
but he is still someone that the USC defense
has to key on. Even in a somewhat down year,
Drew is averaging almost five yards per pop,
and has found the end-zone 12 times.
This is the 5th game between
these two teams in the Pete Carroll era, with
USC going 4-0, and 3-1 against the spread (ATS).
Last season, USC came into the game undefeated,
and UCLA gave them everything they could handle,
before losing 29-24.
College
Football Picks - Bet Now: Texas (-26.5) at Colorado
This Big 12 championship game
is being played at Reliant Stadium in Houston,
which means that Colorado is the “home”
team in name only.
Colorado is 7-4 on the year,
and 5-3 in conference play. Their last game
of the season was an embarrassing 30-3 home
loss to Nebraska, and they wouldn’t even
be playing in this game if Iowa State didn’t
lose to Kansas, 24-21. Colorado is 5-6 ATS this
year, but just 1-4 ATS on the road.
Texas is 11-0, and will receive
an invitation to play USC in the Rose Bowl with
a win. That is assuming that USC takes care
of business against UCLA. Led by quarterback
Vince Young, the Longhorns are the number one
scoring team in the nation. Texas is 9-2 against
the spread this year, and has been at least
a 27 point favorite in their last four games.
They are 2-2 ATS in those contests.
