The college bowl season ends
tonight with Texas at USC in the Rose Bowl national
championship game. It is an exciting culmination
of 28 Bowl games in 16 days, where we saw a
lot of points scored, and still have the two
highest scoring teams left. If you have a prediction
on this game, please post it in the comments
section.
Bet
Now: Bet Now: Texas (+7.5) at USC
Texas is also a perfect 12-0,
having finally got the monkey off their back
by beating Oklahoma. Now they will try to win
their first national championship since 1970,
under Coach Darrell Royal. Royal is a Longhorn
legend having won three national titles.
If current coach, Mack Brown
is going to reach Royal’s elite status,
it will be on the shoulders of quarterback Vince
Young. Young is a dual passing and running threat.
Think of a bigger version of Michael Vick, even
bigger than Randall Cunningham. Young threw
for over 2,700 yards and rushed for 850 more,
and he gives the USC defense their biggest threat
this year.
On defense, the Texas d-line
is big and physical and can create a pass rush
without using the blitz. The Texas secondary
is led by Michael Huff and Cedric Griffin and
is the strength of a very good defense, but
they also have to worry about USC’s Reggie
Bush running routes out of the backfield.
USC is a perfect 12-0 on the
season and is riding a 34 game winning streak.
Their last loss came in September, 2003 at California.
That is pure dominance my friends. Coach Pete
Carroll and the Trojans are just one game away
from becoming the first Division 1-A team in
modern history to win three straight national
championships.
On offense, USC has two Heisman
trophy winners in Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush,
who could also be the first two picks in the
NFL draft. They also have running back, LenDale
White, who will likely be a first round pick
as well if he comes out early.
They also have as fine a wide
receiver tandem as any team in the country with
sophomore Dwayne Jarrett and junior Steve Smith.
Speaking of the USC defense,
they are giving up over 21 points per game,
seven points more than Texas. They have to be
careful about blitzing Young to much, because
if he breaks containment, he is capable of running
80 yards, Young is also adept at taking advantage
of one-on-one coverage on his speedy wide receivers.
Get your calculators ready, as
each of these teams is averaging over 50 points
per game. While I would much prefer to take
USC in this game if the spread was 7 or 6.5,
a half a point means a little less when the
scoring is predicted to be this high.
On paper, the USC offense has
a small edge, while the Texas defense gets the
slight edge. However, the USC defense is known
to step it up in big games, as witnessed by
last year’s 55-19 win over Oklahoma in
the championship game. This contest will not
be a blowout, but the Trojans will eventually
win by double digits.
