Analysis |
1.
JaMarcus Russell
Qb |
LSU |
Raiders |
QS - The most naturally gifted QB
in the 2007 Draft. Strong in the
pocket and can take a hit. Great
fit for a vertical passing game,
but I'm not sure he'll get to throw
to Randy Moss this year. Boom or
BUST potential.
MP - Not smart. I
think the Raiders could have drafted
CJ and traded him for whoever took
Russell and some extra picks and
the Raiders need more help than
even a potentially great QB. Either
way Russell probably needs some
time to develop into an NFL QB.
Al Davis likes him so he can hope
this is the guy to take Oakland
out of the cellar. Picks
like this is one of the reasons
OAK finished 2-14
|
2.
Calvin Johnson WR |
Georgia
Tech |
Lions |
QS - Rare size speed and strength, makes
him tough after the catch. Excellent
player, for my $$ the best player
in the draft. Should become a yearly
PRO bowl selection, and I compare
him to a combo of Moss and Owens.
MP -
Awesome pick! This is the best Lions
draft choice in the Matt Millen era.
This pick may make up for some questionable
picks in the past few drafts whether
they keep him or not. This choice
makes the Lions a better team instantly
even with all the FA WR’s the
Lions signed in the off season. Martz
is thrilled. Maybe the Lions won't
be the NFC North whipping boys this
year. |
3.
Joe Thomas OT |
Wisconsin |
*
Browns |
QS - Love this kid. Outstanding athlete.
Can easily get to the second level,
even the third. He should be an NFL
starter for a long long time. He
should help the Browns immediatly.
He needs to develop a nasty streak,
but that's his only downside.
MP - Not my choice but still a solid pick for the Browns. This helps them in a several ways on offense. Maybe not as much as the best RB or next best QB would have helped but still a very good choice that will set up the Browns at T for years. The Browns needed help on O-line and got it in a big way. |
4.
Gaines Adams DE |
Clemson |
*
Buccaneers |
QS
- First off Gaines...Your MOM has
a bad MULLET. Ok great pic for Tampa
even though they want Johnson. Outstanding
speed and size and a great athlete.
Light on his feet and disruptive
off the edge. The best pass rusher
in the draft. High risk, high reward.
MP - Outstanding pick. TB needed help on defense and I thought Gruden wouldn't be able to resist the offensive guys left but credit to a smart coach. This is the best pick TB could have made after losing White. Still knowing Gruden we should watch for a trade to the Lions for CJ |
5.
Levi Brown OT |
Penn
State |
Cardinals |
QS
- Very good run blocker who can drive
defenders off the ball. Four year
starter at OLT, and he has all the
ability teams want in a tackle. He
can handle all types of rushers including
the bull rush, and the DE's with
high impact moves, because of his
great balance.
MP - Protecting Leinhart is job one for the new coaching staff and replacing Leonard Davis is a smart move. The Cards will turn their program around yet if they keep up the smart drafting that Dennis Green started a few years ago. Don't look now but Cards are starting to build a winner. Excellent pick even if he is selected a little high for my liking. |
6.
LaRon Landry S |
LSU |
Redskins |
QS - A
great punishing hitter. Should quickly
establish himself as an impact player
alongside Sean Taylor in the Pro's.
Plus he has instincts, intelligenc
and the athletic ability to find
himself in the Pro Bowl year after
year. Great character pick.
MP - Being a Cowboys fan I do not like this pick at all but that tells you that it is a great one for the 'Skins. Redskins need this guy to match up with the WR and QB's in the NFC East and now the coaches can open up and allow Taylor to wreak some havoc near the line where he should be better. Solid addition to the Skins D. |
7.
Adrian Peterson RB |
Oklahoma |
Vikings |
QS - A
6'2" 220 Lb back that will be the
thunder to Chester Taylor's lightning.
Indoors on the fast track? Watch
out. As long as he's healthy. He
is a load to tackle and will wear
down defenses. A true downhill workhorse,
APete instantly upgrades the Vikings
offense.
MP - Rare talent so this is probably the best pick outside of Calvin Johnson of this year's draft. Dynamic offensive players are difficult to find and Peterson is an explosive gamebreaker. Minnesota got a great back here and made a smart move not letting him drop any farther. |
8.
Jamaal Anderson DE |
Arkansas |
Falcons
(From Houston) |
QS -
6'5" 275lber and quick. A great all
around athlete, and former receiver
in high school. Led the SEC in sacks
and tackles for loss last year. He
has all the potential to develop
into a real solid Pro. He fills a
need in Atlanta with Kerney gone
and Abraham coming off of an injury
riddled season. He'll have to improve
his run defense.
MP - Atlanta's bringing back the "dirty bird" but this Jamaal Anderson plays defense and is a position of need for the sack-less Falcons. Learning from Abraham will help his development immensely. The Falcons needed to upgrade the pass rush to help out DHall and the secondary and they hope Anderson is that guy. |
9.
Tedd Ginn Jr. WR |
Ohio
St. |
Dolphins |
QS
- World class sprinter speed &
can flat-out fly. Durable and played
in every game since he arrived at
Ohio State. Rare speed will force
defenses to account for him. He will
draw double coverage and open up the
passing game for Miami.
MP - Terrible pick. The Dolphins have needs and a 1st round return man to replace Wes Welker is a stretch. They could have used almost any position more than WR and Ginn is a stretch this high. Sure he is fast and can help on returns but I don't think he helps the Fins as much as a S, CB, DL, LB or a QB would help. Dolphins are losing ground in the AFC East. |
10.
Amobi Okoye DT |
Louisville |
Texans
(From Atlanta) |
QS
- 19 years old so the jury is still
out on this kid. He's talented and
quick, but when will he mature? Great
balance and rarely spends any time
on the ground. Fits best as a 3 technique,
in a penetrating upfield scheme like
Colts, but now w/ Texas and Mario
Williams we'll see how he matures,
and what his eventual playing weight
will be...
MP - Great pick.so much upside and will help Mario reach his potential and make the Texans a fearsome defense. This guy helps the pass rush and secondary has the potential to be a superstar in the mold of Warren Sapp. This pick is an outstanding move for the Texans and should help them get after division QB's Manning, Young and Leftwich. |
11.
Patrick Willis LB |
Mississippi |
49ers |
QS - The
#1 Inside backer on our draft
rankings.
265 tackles over the last 2 seasons
and a Butkis award winner. Fast FAST
Fast. Terrific physical specimen.
Didn't have much of a supporting
cast and had to compensate for it,
and made out just fine consistently
making plays for a bad defense. Has
overcome adversity and lives for
playing in the NFL. Good pick San
Fran.
MP -
Another great pick.maybe they all look
good after Ginn @ 9? This is a difference
maker on D and will help the Niners
front seven immediately. WR fast, DE
strength and the total package at LB
to bring a little defensive prowess
back to the Bay. Nolan's Niners are
starting to make some noise in the
NFC West, SF needed an answer for Alexander, Edge and Jackson and got it... |
12.
Marshawn Lynch RB |
California |
Bills |
QS
- I love this kid. Well built with
good size and run strength to power
through tackles. A complete three
down back, he doesn't leave the game,
and can go the distance. His only
downside is he's never proved he can
be a feature back, so I guess the
AFC East will be introduced to him
this year as he replaces the departed
McGahee.
MP - Maybe a little early for Lynch but Buffalo traded MacGahee for some odd reason and Lynch fills that need. He may suit Levy's style a little better that catches and has some speed, thinking Levy had Thurman Thomas and may want to re-create those glory days. Buffalo needs help on offense but maybe the top CB would have been a safer pick at this spot in the draft. |
13.
Adam Carricker DE/DT |
Nebraska |
Rams |
QS
- Strong kid who can press blocks,
reset the line of scrimmage and collapse
the pocket. Plays hard and always
gives a great effort. Tough as well
as evidenced by playing thru injuries
in his last 2 years. Could be considered
inside in a 4-3 scheme, and the Rams
will like him with the noise of their
dome. Overall a good pick for a proven
3 year starter.
MP - Rams are making up for some failed interior picks and Carriker is a solid choice. This will help clog up the middle for the Rams and keep blockers off the smallish Ram LB's. He will help bring down the good RB in the NFC West and addresses a real need for the Rams. Motor that won't quit unlike some former Rams picks. Solid pick for St. Louis. |
14.
Darrelle Revis CB |
Pittsburgh |
Jets
(From Panthers) |
QS
- Quick to jump routes and makes plays
on the ball in front of him. Very
strong, and aggressive run support
defender, ready to step in and be
a starter with the Jets today. Good
sized physical press corner, who just
might turn out to be a better safety
than corner with the way he loves
to hit guys.
MP - Great pick although maybe they gave up too much. This is a need pick and the top CB's may be off the board by the time they pick so we see Mangini try and match up against his former teams moves to add WR's.and Ted Ginn (just kidding). Revis is likely the best corner so the Jets make a move for the guy they wanted.can't argue with that. |
15.
Lawrence Timmons LB |
Florida
St. |
Steelers |
QS
- Had a solid junior year after backing
up Detroit Lions 2006 pick Ernie Sims.
He's still raw and inexperienced but
possesses the athletisism and ability
to quickly adapt to the pro game in
Pittsburgh as Joey Porters replacement.
Enjoy the cold Florida boy.
MP - A solid pick and a need to replace aging troublemaker Joey Porter. Timmons is versatile and that is likely why the Steelers made him the pick higher than many had him rated. There may have been more value at CB here but the Steelers and new coach Tomlin have few needs so this is obviously the player they liked best. |
16.
Justin Harrell DT |
Tennessee |
Packers |
QS
- Very fluid for his size, good athlete,
good initial quickness, outstanding
strength, good awareness, and feels
where the pressure is coming from.
He's a versatile young player and
has the size to line up outside in
a 3-4 front. Has to bounce back from
a torn triceps injury that forced
him to miss most of his senior season.
MP - Surprise move by the Pack! I don't think I agree with pick with Branch the DT from Mich on the board still but Wolfe generally makes good personnel decisions. Harrell helps out a lot because GB needs DL and Harrell is strong with a good motor. I liked Branch but GB knows something I don't.not surprising. |
17.
Jarvis Moss DE |
Florida |
Broncos (from Jaguars) |
QS
- My #2 ranked DE from my rankings.
With Jim Bates in Miami he worked
well with Taylor, maybe he can work
some magic on Moss with Denver again.
Moss can develop into a premium pass
rusher. He has great length and a
lot of room to add bulk plus can still
get stronger. Great motor, and a good
pick by Denver.
MP - Shanahan gave up a lot to move up 4 picks but this maybe a good move as Denver needs to address the pass rush but I think Moss is there for them at 21 if they sit still. Jags win this deal but Shanny gets his speed guy from the outside to get after the QB's and track down the RB's from the backside.a reach but maybe a necessity as DE gets pretty thin from here on out. |
18.
Leon Hall CB |
Michigan |
Bengals |
QS
- On most draft boards Hall was the
#1 DB out there, and Cinci is lovin
the fact that he dropped to them at
#18. A true playmaker in Ty Law mold.
Natural athletic ability, good feet
and smooth hips. Great at disecting
patterns and good in run support.
A good character guy, who is well
respected by teammates and staff.
Very mature, consistent and rarely
gets beat short or long.
MP - Outstanding value at 18. Some had Hall going in the top ten so the Bengals got a steal by sitting still at 18. Very solid technically but most important for the prison, er tiger, stripes of the Bengals is he is a solid character guy. No jail time makes him a favorite of Marvin Lewis and he can help keep the Bengals out of long bomb shootouts, replacing Tory James. Great pick. |
19.
Michael Griffin S |
Texas |
Titans |
QS
- Great athlete who will come up to
support the run and is a bigtime playmaker.
Is clearly talented and has the physical
tools to do everything he is asked.
Will become a very good pro, and can
easily interchange between strong
and free safety, plus he should produce
on special teams as well for the Titans.
MP - Wow. I think there are still 2 better safeties on the board than Griffin so I think this is a stretch for the Titans. Both Nelson and Merriweather are likely better prospects but the Titans like the ability of Griffin to play both Safety positions. Character guy and another Longhorn to play opposite Vince Young. Maybe Vince vouched for Griffin.could he have that much sway already? |
20.
Aaron Ross CB |
Texas |
Giants |
QS
- The Giants needed a CB, and they
got their man. A real ball hawking
DB who wants every ball thrown in
his direction. Has the size, instincts
and toughness, plus the skills to
become the next great DB in New York.
Is still learning the game, but he
has plenty of upside. A bit of a stretch,
but a decent pick.
MP - The G-Men solidify a position of weakness with this CB from Texas. I don't like the Giants but I do like the pick because Ross is a good corner and a welcome addition to the secondary. The NFC East has some good WR and QB's so upgrading the secondary was a must. Ross helps on defense and as a return man. Good solid pick to start the bottom third of the draft. |
21.
Reggie Nelson S |
Florida |
Jaguars (From Broncos) |
QS
- A safety with cornerbacks feet,
plus he has great speed and burst,
and is an excellent tackler. I thought
he might slip to the second round,
so he'll be happy to go here to Jacksonville.
He could be an impact player if he's
asked to not do a lot, when he's comfortable
in the Jacksonville D's system he'll
be a good pro.
MP - Great pick by the Jags although I hate the fact they stole him from the Cowboys. Nelson has slipped a long way further than I thought he would and is an outstanding value this late in the draft. Nelson replaces Deon Grant easily as a ball hawking centerfielder and has the speed to play catch up. Love this player and think he is as good at safety as the guy taken fifteen picks ago. Del Rio and the Jags move down and get their guy. perfect draft |
22.
Brady Quinn QB |
Notre
Dame |
Browns
(from Cowboys) |
QS
- The state of Ohio gets their man.
Great size, good strong build, experienced,
and can handle a ton of pressure.
Without question he possesses many
qualities of a franchise QB and will
not require much "coaching".
He's prepared for the PRO offense
and Romeo is smiling big today. Good
day for Cleveland.
MP - Cleveland makes a deal and sells out for this years draft. A gutsy move by Savage but I think they got an excellent player and Jerry Jones does it again by getting a first round pick next year for a late first rounder. Both teams win in this one but as a Dallas fan I hope Cleveland doesn't win next year. Brady Quinn will love throwing to Edwards and Winslow.makes for a great draft today. |
23.
Dwayne Bowe WR |
LSU |
Chiefs |
QS
- Really emerged as the goto guy at
LSU catching balls from Russell. The
chiefs needed this guy badly. He's
got outstanding athletic ability and
a terrific playing demeanor. Plus
he's got a great chance to become
a blue chip player but is not there
just yet but will continue to develop.
MP - FINALLY the Chiefs draft some help for Tony Gonzalez and it is about time. They got the best WR after Calvin Johnson in this draft so KC has had a good draft already. He blocks for the run game and has the best hands of anyone not wearing #21. Huard and Gonzo are calling management, thanking them and maybe even offering to take a pay cut for this move on a WR. |
24.
Brandon Meriweather S |
Miami |
Patriots
(from Seattle) |
QS
- He can line up at safety, move to
the slot in nickel situations and
even move out to corner when needed.
He could still add another 15lbs and
answer questions about his size, just
like Ed Reed did with the Ravens.
Rodney Harrison has his young apprentice.
MP
- The U sends a safety to the Seahawks,
oh that's right the Seahawks got Deion
Branch, the Pats get a premium safety
with their pick. Meriweather's character
is not a problem with the Pats because
they are the Pats. He will get straight
in NE and this is a safety with rare
CB cover skills. An outstanding pick
to team up with and learn from Harrison
creating a formidable secondary. Pats
strike gold again. |
25.
Jon Beason OLB |
Miami |
Panthers |
QS
- Do we have another Ray Lewis? He
can be a difference maker if he can
stay healthy. Very compactly built
with a strong muscular build and big,
thick legs. Great producer, led Miami
in tackles despite missing time with
injury. He will command respect from
teammates and the Panthers are happy.
MP - A run on players from the 'U' has the speedy LB Beason going to Carolina to help replace losses last season and help improve the front seven. Apparently Thomas Davis is not adjusting to his move to LB so well and Beason is a LB.this move may make 2 first round picks starters if Davis moves back to safety. Good pick if that works and if not Olsen would have suited Delhomme and the offense better. |
26.
Anthony Spencer DE |
Purdue |
Cowboys (from Eagles) |
QS
- 26 1/2 tackles for loss last year.
So this kid can bring it. Dallas gets
yet another off the edge pass rusher
I'm assuming to play opposite Ware.
He has improved as much as any player
in college football from junior to
senior season. If he puts it all together
he'll have every chance to make it
big at the pro level. Don't count
him out at developing at the LB position
either.
MP - Jerry Jones does it again.trades back in with the 1st from Cleveland from next year to get Ellis' replacement on the outside a 3-4 backer and 4-3 rush end. I like the move although I wonder if Houston isn't a better value here. The Cowboys scooped up a lot of picks from a division rival so I love it and I just started rooting for Cleveland to win this year.
|
27.
Robert Meachem WR |
Tennessee |
Saints |
QS
- 6'2" 215lbs, he's a big boy,
and plays well in the big game. Emerged
as the goto receiver in the Volunteers
offense and consistently produced
when his number was called. He should
be able to contribute immediatly.
I'm big on him BIGTIME, and I love
the Saints offensive weapons even
more now. Wow!
MP - Great pick. Meachem is a burner and makes Brees Bush and Colston much more dangerous. Payton is building an Indy-type offense very quickly if Meachem can hang onto the ball. I think I like Olsen a bit more in NO for Brees but adding more weapons outside to replace Horn is welcome. An already explosive offense gets another bomb threat.
|
28.
Joe Staley OT |
Western
Michigan |
49ers
(from Patriots) |
QS
- Great feet and athletisism, and
can play left tackle in the NFL. Used
to be a tight end. Definatly has upside
and the 49ers want character guys
and get it with Staley. On paper he's
a top 10 pick but didn't have the
competition level needed to get up
there. Could start for the 49ers for
the next 10 years.
MP
- Moving into the 1st round for the
second consecutive year to grab the
best OT on my board is a terrific
move for the 49ers. Gore must be whispering
in someone's ear in SF. Did they give
up too much? Absolutely! SF wants
to be good now and the NFC West should
be much more competitive this year
with Staley providing protection and
running lanes in the Bay. Good move
Niners...tomorrow waits for no man. |
29.
Ben Grubbs G |
Auburn |
Ravens |
QS
- Graded out better than 90% in eight
of Auburn's first 11 games in 2006,
and finished career with 38 consecutive
starts. He has a great deal of natural
athletic ability, great feet, balance,
quickness, and recover skills. I thought
he'd warrant late first round consideration,
and whattya know? It's where he went.
MP - Ravens get a steal and a player they desperately need to improve the offensive line. Ogden postponed retirement and suddenly the Ravens line is back in order for new stud RB MacGahee. I love this move for the Ravens.trade for a good RB then get some lanes cleared for him. The Ravens continue making solid picks in the first round with Grubbs. |
30.
Craig Davis WR |
LSU |
Chargers |
QS
- When his number has been called
he's confidently caught and advanced
the football. Plus he's got the Punt
returning background. So the Chargers
get a double threat. He's intruiging
and has a lot of potential for big
improvement. He's smart, has good
character, is a hard worker, and will
get the job done for the Chargers.
Good job AJ Smith.
MP - This is a serious stretch. I think there are at least 3 WR that are better still on the board. Maybe AJ Smith is losing his draft savvy? I thought he was one of the best GM's this time of the season but I think Davis could be there when they pick in the 2nd. The Chargers could have drafted Olsen to play WR and I'd have thought it a better move than this. |
31.
Greg Olsen TE |
Miami |
Bears |
QS
- A weapon for Rex. A 265 lber who
can run a 4.5 40yd dash. Easily the
nations best TE, and can flat out
catch the ball. He is smooth, has
good speed, and as a rookie could
rank as one of the top tight ends
next year. Yes fantasy footballers..next
year. With strength and some more
power he'll become a complete tight
end at the next level.
MP - Great move by the Bears. Olsen is a TE that runs like a WR and will replace Desmond Clark almost immediately. Olsen creates match-up problems and Chicago got a steal this late in the draft as I had Olsen going in the teens even if someone had to trade up to get him. Bears improve on offense today. |
32.
Anthony Gonzalez WR |
Ohio
St. |
Colts |
QS
- Will fit in great with the Colts
offense and becomes the new Brandon
Stokely. Will make a living as a slot
receiver with Payton chucking him
the ball. Arrives early, stays late,
wants to win, plays with determination
and his play on the field reflects
his character, gritty and tough. Colts
got a good one. Round 1 Over!
MP
- This is a better pick than Davis
with the Chargers but still I question
this. Houston Branch or Posluszny
would have made more sense to me for
the SB Champs but more offensive weapons
for Manning likely scares opponents
more. Indy gets a WR that can fill
Stokely’s spot and stretch the
field some as well as go over the
middle. Still I think there are better
WR on the board and Indy needs defense. |
