The favorites got dumped on worse than a Cleveland
snowstorm in Week 15.
Along with a dismal 6-9 ATS record by the favorites
last weekend, four potential playoff teams: Dallas,
Pittsburgh, Seattle and the New York Giants all
lost their games straight up.
Those losses make for some very interesting
matchups this week, starting with Pittsburgh
heading to St. Louis as 7 ½-point favorites
for the Thursday night tilt.
The Steelers’ loss
to Jacksonville on Sunday leaves them tied
with Cleveland for the AFC North lead. While
both teams have a 9-5 record, Pittsburgh owns
the tie-breaker after sweeping the season series,
but they must win at St. Louis and then at
Baltimore next week to claim the division.
Dallas’ stunning home loss to Philadelphia
has them tied with Green Bay for the best record
in the NFC at 12-2. While the Cowboys have clinched
a first-round bye, they don’t want to play
a potential NFC Championship game in freezing
Green Bay.
Dallas owns the tie-breaker over the Packers
due to their head-to-head victory, but they must
win their Saturday night game at Carolina and
then the following Sunday in Washington. Neither
of those games is an automatic win, even though
Dallas is a double-digit favorite over the Panthers
this weekend.
The Sunday games are highlighted by other teams
still fighting for playoff spots and positioning.
Jacksonville (10-4)
is coming off a very impressive road win in
the snow at Pittsburgh. The Jaguars come from
the warm weather climate of Sunny Florida,
but Coach Jack Del Rio’s team plays a
physical style of football that can match up
with any Northeast squad. The Jaguars lock
up an AFC Wild Card spot this week if they
beat Oakland as 13-point chalk at home.
Cleveland (9-5)
is a three-point favorite against in-state
rival Cincinnati. The Browns head to Cincinnati
having won seven of their last nine games and
they look like a team you don’t
want to meet come playoff time.
At 8-6, Tennessee
is hanging on for dear life in the playoff
chase. The Titans get the Jets at home on Sunday
as nine-point favorites. Jets’ quarterback
Chad Pennington could get the start for the injured
Kellen Clemens.
In the NFC, the Giants (9-5) failed to secure
a playoff berth with a home loss versus Washington,
and now they are a three-point favorite at Buffalo
this week. This is a must-win for New York with
the undefeated Patriots on tap next. The Giants
received some bad injury news when it was learned
that tight end Jeremy Shockey is out for the
year with a broken leg.
