There are many great rivalries in the world
of sports like Ohio State and Michigan in college
football, the Red Sox and Yankees in baseball,
and Toronto and Montreal in the NHL.
But the most hated
rivalry in sports right now is the Jets and
Patriots after the Jets turned the Patriots
into the league during the “Spygate” videotaping
scandal.
It‘s that
extra motivation that has help make the Patriots
a 24
point favorite this Sunday, a
historically big number. One of the reasons the
spread is so big is that the Patriots are 13-0
and trying to become the first team in NFL history
to finish the regular season at 16-0.
It’s also common opinion that New England
Coach Bill Belichick will run up the score on
Eric Mangini’s team simply for payback.
At the very least, there’s no way these
men attend the same Christmas party this year
unless Mangini doesn’t mind a little cyanide
in his eggnog.
Elsewhere around the AFC, Jacksonville (9-4)
looks like a shoo-in for one of the AFC Wild
Cards, but they have a tough game this week as
four-point dogs at Pittsburgh. The 9-4 Steelers
could not back up their trash talking last Sunday
at New England, and they must keep winning to
stay a top the AFC North.
Another game sure to draw a lot of attention
is Buffalo getting 5.5
points at Cleveland. The Browns
and Coach Romeo Crennel are one of the feel good
stories in the NFL this year. They have rebounded
from a 4-12 record last year to sit at 8-5 this
season.
A win over the
Bills keeps Cleveland in the driver’s
seat for the second AFC Wild Card spot. Buffalo
is 7-6 after beating Miami and this is also
a huge game for their playoff chances.
Tennessee is the
other AFC team at 7-6, and their heads must
still be a little fuzzy after blowing a 14-point
4th quarter lead to San Diego, losing 23-17
in overtime. The Titans still have one of the
best coaches in the NFL in Jeff Fisher and
he’ll get his team focused as they
travel to Kansas City as four-point favorites.
The NFC playoff picture is a little less murky
with Dallas, Green Bay, Tampa Bay and Seattle
all pretty much set to win their divisions.
The Giants look poised for the top NFC Wild
Card at 9-4 and they try to solidify their position
as 4.5-point home
favorites versus Washington on Sunday night.
Minnesota (7-6) has a leg up on the second
NFC Wild Card. The Vikings host the Bears as
surprising nine-point home favorites on Monday
night.
Other spreads just released at Sportsbook.com
have Denver (+2) at Houston on Thursday night.
Sunday contests have Seattle (-7) at Carolina,
Indianapolis (-10.5) at Oakland, Detroit (+10)
at San Diego, and Philadelphia (+10) at Dallas,
