Another full board
of six games bowl games grace the New Year’s
Day schedule. It all starts at 11:00 AM ET
so be sure to set the alarm clock for an early
start after your evening of indulgence.
Here’s
a brief look at the four early games.
Outback Bowl – Wisconsin
vs. Tennessee
Wisconsin will
be squaring off vs. an SEC team in a bowl game
for the fifth straight year, this time against
East Division champion Tennessee. Both teams
won nine games this season with the Volunteers
boasting a 7-4 ATS record as compared to the
Badgers’ 4-7 mark at the betting
window.
Wisconsin has been
the better bowl team lately though, going 2-1
SU & 3-0 ATS in its L3,
all as an underdog. In fact, in Wisky’s
L8 bowl games overall, underdogs own an impressive
7-1 ATS record. Tennessee, a field goal favorite,
played in this same game last year, losing to
Penn State, 20-10. HC Phil Fullmer’s team
is 17-8 ATS in road games against top-level teams
(Win Pct. > 75%) while Wisconsin owns a non-conference
record of 10-2 ATS in the L3 seasons.
Cotton Bowl - Arkansas vs. Missouri
Missouri was a
win away from reaching the national championship
game. Instead, the loss vs. Oklahoma, the second
of 2007, relegates the Tigers to the Cotton
Bowl. Against teams other than the Sooners,
Missouri was 11-0, and overall it was 9-3 ATS,
scoring 40.0 PPG. It was the finest season for
the program in 37 years and this will be the
Tigers’ first New Year’s Day or later
bowl game since 1972.
The Razorbacks
will not be an easy foe however, as they run
for an incredible 297 YPG & 6.2
YPR, led by star RB Darren McFadden. Both he
and Tigers’ QB Chase Daniel were Heisman
finalists so this bowl game will certainly not
lack star power. Arkansas has struggled in bowl
games recently, going 2-6 SU & 3-5 ATS, including
a loss in this bowl game in ’02.
Capital One Bowl – Michigan
vs. Florida
Florida was arguably
one of the country’s
best teams in the month of November, sweeping
four games SU & ATS while scoring 51 PPG.
The Gators are of course led by stud QB Tim Tebow,
who totaled 51 touchdowns running and throwing
the ball in ’07. They are a 10.5 point
favorite in this game. HC Urban Meyer’s
spread attack is averaging an incredible 9.7
yards per pass attempt.
The Wolverines,
who are playing their last game for departing
coach Lloyd Carr, won eight games in a row
at one point this season, but sandwiched those
with a pair of losses on each end. This will
be the second meeting in the L15 years between
these storied programs. Michigan won the last
one, 38-30 in the ’04 Outback Bowl.
Gator Bowl – Texas
Tech vs. Virginia
Texas Tech enjoyed
a typical season in ’07,
going 8-4 SU & 6-5 ATS. Virginia meanwhile,
posted its best regular season won-lost mark
since 1998. Still, the Red Raiders find themselves
as a six point favorite here. That fact could
prove significant when you consider recent history
in this game, as favored teams own a 10-game
outright winning streak and 9-1 ATS record. Tech
again boasted the country’s most prolific
passing attack, gaining 476 YPG through the air
and 8.2 PYA.
Virginia only out-gained
teams by 5 YPG and won six games by 5-points
or less. The Cavaliers only played four games
vs. teams with a winning record going 3-1 SU & 1-3 ATS. They have
been involved in many high scoring bowl games
of late, with the OVER 8-1 in the L9.
