The only team to win
a Super Bowl in this division finds itself
bottom feeding once again. Jeff Garcia has
been shipped in to run John Gruden’s
version of the West Coast offense. Can he recreate
the magic he had in Philadelphia and lead the
Bucs out of obscurity? If so, he will have a
lot of Floridian NFL betting enthusiasts seeing
green.
The Buccaneers were unable to grab Calvin Johnson,
and instead restocked their defense starting
with Gaines Adams in the draft. Adams is vulnerable
to the run, but is the high-speed athlete that
the Bucs like to have in their lineup.

Adding Cato June to the linebacker corps, alongside
Barrett Ruud and Derrick Brooks, will solidify
a spot that was troublesome for Tampa last season.
The secondary still is not what they would like,
and the Bucs will remain vulnerable to the pass
as they were last season.
The problem last year
with the Bucs was their horrible production
at quarterback. Chris Simms led the team to
a 0-3 start by throwing one score and seven
picks. In the four years he has been with the
Bucs, he still has not gotten a grasp on Gruden’s
system.
Let’s not mention Brad Gradkowski (which
is Polish for ‘three and out’, apparently)
or the unlikely presence of Jake Plummer, who
still claims to be retired.
Hence, why they brought in Jeff Garcia. Garcia
still has the legs and the arm to play well in
this league, and the weapons are there. Cadillac
Williams will run much smoother with B.J. Askew
blocking for him at fullback. Askew is the same
guy that helped Curtis Martin become a future
HOF.
The receiving corps remains the same. Joey Galloway
is still one of the fastest guys in the league,
and Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall will
compete for the number two spot. Both are solid,
young talents. Alex Smith emerged as a viable
option at tight-end.
The Bucs were an atrocious team last year, but
solved the majority of their problems with smart
acquisitions in the off-season. With Atlanta
likely to stumble as they adjust to a new coach
and leader, and the quarterback tension in Carolina
set to split the team apart, Tampa could surprise
a lot of people.
And with odds like that, it just maybe worth
taking a flyer out on this bet.
