The San Diego Chargers made some serious changes
for a team that went 14-2 in the regular season
and was one step away from reaching the AFC championship
game.
Gone is former head
coach Marty Schottenheimer and filing his shoes
is none other than former Chargers offensive
coordinator and veteran NFL head coach Norv
Turner. Turner is known as one of the league’s
most innovative offensive coordinators ever.
Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and defensive
coordinator Wade Philips are gone and how their
replacements will fare remains to be seen. The
truth is, only time will tell whether or not
the Chargers will be able to overcome those changes.
Here is a look at the 2007 San Diego Chargers.
Offense: The Chargers
return nearly every player from last year’s
team and should once again be one of the top
offensive units in all of football. The scary
thing about the Chargers offense is that it
has the potential to get a lot better over
the next couple of seasons as young quarterback
Philip Rivers matures even further. The Chargers
think they have found a gem in young wide receiver
Craig Davis.
Defense: Just like
the offensive side of the football, the Chargers
return nearly every starter from last year’s team with the notable
exception of veteran Donnie Edwards. Either Matt
Wilhelm or Anthony Waters will replace Edwards,
but the loss of Philips, one of the league’s
best defensive coordinators, is going to sting.
Analysis: I personally believe that Turner is
far more suited to being an offensive coordinator
than a head coach and his unimpressive 58-82-1
career record as a head coach in stops at Washington
and Oakland is a good indicator of that. While
the Chargers are still loaded and will be a legitimate
contender to win Super Bowl XLII, I believe they
will take a small step backwards during the regular
season. I think 11 or 12 wins may be about right
for the Chargers in 2007.
Football Betting View: Despite their spectacular
14-2 SU record, the Chargers were only 9-7 ATS.
They were a solid 10-6 against the O/U, but could
take a slight step backwards in 2007 in both
their SU and ATS records. Bettors need to pay
close attention to how the Chargers respond to
Turner this season.
