The New
York Jets surprised a lot of people in 2006 by winning
10 games in head coach Eric Mangini’s
first season. They proved they were no fluke
by splitting games with the New England Patriots
during the regular season and competing hard
in every contest for Mangini.
Here is a look at the 2007 New York Jets.
Offense: The Jets have a wonderfully accurate
quarterback in veteran Chad Pennington and should
be better on the ground in 2007 than they were
last season with the addition of Thomas Jones
from the Chicago Bears.
New York also has
the foundation for one of the game’s most solid offensive lines for
years to come with young offensive linemen D’Brickashaw
Ferguson and Nick Mangold. The Jets also have
a good pair of wide receivers in Jerricho Cotchery
and Laveranues Coles.
Defense: In New York’s
first year using the 3-4, the Jets managed
to overcome some real problems up front that
allowed opposing rushers to gain a whopping
4.6 yards per attempt last season.
Veterans David Bowens, Shaun Ellis and Eric
Hicks will be counted on along the defensive
line, but are all question marks for varying
reasons. Rookies David Harris and Darrelle Revis
will likely start at linebacker and cornerback
respectively.
Mangini needs to find
a way to better utilize former Pro Bowl linebacker
Jonathan Vilma who was lost in last year’s
system change.
Analysis: The Jets
ranked 25th in the league in offense last season
and 20th in defense and could post similar
numbers this year - though I expect them to
be slightly better offensively with the addition
of Jones. Even so, surpassing last year’s
startling record will be a monumental task
in the powerful AFC.
Football Betting View:
The Jets tied for the league lead last season
going an impressive 11-5 ATS while also recording
a solid 9-7 O/U record. New York’s numbers
may dip just a bit this season, along with
their SU record, so bettors beware depending
on what team lines up against the Jets each
week.
