The Kansas
City Chiefs were a team in the midst of change last season
in veteran head coach Herman Edwards’ first
season in Kansas City. The Chiefs may have
gone 9-7 last season, but Kansas City may have
even more questions than answers heading into
the 2007.
Here is a look at the 2007 Kansas City Chiefs.
Offense: Prior to last season, the Chiefs had
one of the most explosive offenses in all of
football for the last half-decade.
Edwards instantly changed that by turning the
Chiefs into a predictable bunch that depended
far too much on the rushing of running back Larry
Johnson - who set an NFL record last season with
417 carries. Making matters worse for the Chiefs
was the loss of veteran quarterback Trent Green
to a serious concussion.
With Green no longer in the fold the Chiefs
were forced to hold a competition for the starting
job, between veteran Damon Huard and youngster
Brodie Croyle, which Huard easily won.
Now Kansas City may be looking at an exhausted
Johnson and mediocre play from the quarterback
position - two ominous situations that will bear
watching in Kansas City.
The Chiefs’ offensive line took a major
hit by losing Willie Roaf and Will Shields, their
two best linemen, not to mention the fact that
the Chiefs’ receiving core of Eddie Kennison,
Sammy Parker and youngsters, Dwayne Bowe or and
Chris Hannon is mediocre at best.
Defense: The Chiefs’ defense
may be a bit better in 2007 than they were
last season as Edwards continues to mold this
group into a solid unit.
Cornerbacks Patrick Surtain and Ty Law are still
one of the top tandems in all of football and
the additions of veteran linebackers Donnie Edwards
and Napoleon Harris will help youngsters Derrick
Johnson and Tamba Hali immensely. This aging
veteran-laden defensive group may see at least
two or three starters depart following the 2007
season.
Analysis: I think
the Chiefs will be lucky to post an 8-8 record
this season. Huard and Croyle both have glaring
shortcomings and the Chiefs overworked Johnson
big time last season while not throwing the
ball nearly enough, particularly to all-world
tight end Tony Gonzalez. Expect Kansas City’s
opponents to stack the line and dare the Chiefs
to beat them by throwing the ball.
Football Betting View:
Kansas City posted solid, but not outstanding
numbers both in their ATS and O/U records last
season, but will likely have a much more difficult
time in doing so in 2007. NFL bettors need
to toss out the Chiefs’ surprising
season last year and check their opponent’s
defense each week as Kansas City will likely
have a tough time scoring this year. Bettors
may also want to look at taking the “Under” on
more Kansas City games this year with their formerly
high-powered offense a thing of the past now.
