The Denver
Broncos are a team I think could
surprise a lot of people in 2007. Young quarterback
Jay Cutler will be the full-time starter from
opening day and the Broncos acquired a big time
runner that seems tailor made for their offense
in Travis Henry. If Cutler matures quickly and
the defense comes together, Denver could contend
for more than just the AFC West title.
Here is a look at the 2007 Denver Broncos.
Offense: Denver went
just 2-3 in Cutler’s
five starts but the Broncos had injuries to several
key players during that time and would appear
to have the foundations for offensive success
firmly in place with Cutler. Henry will be in
the backfield and Cutler will throw to wideouts
Javon Walker and Brandon Marshall (who will likely
replace veteran Rod Smith in the starting lineup
this season). The Broncos also made a great free
agent acquisition by acquiring tight end Daniel
Graham - formerly of the New England Patriots.
Graham and Henry should help Cutler immediately
and as usual, the Broncos will field one of the
better offensive lines in all of football. The
Broncos will need more production this season
out of young receivers David Kircus and Quincy
Morgan while veteran slot receiver Brandon Stokley
recovers from Achilles surgery.
Defense: The Broncos had some serious pass defense
issues that the Indianapolis Colts exploited
in week seven last year. They think they have
addressed these problems in this past offseason.
Acquiring veteran cornerback Dre Bly to pair
with Champ Bailey and replacing the late Darrent
Williams was nothing short of a coup that will
pay immediate dividends for the Broncos this
season. It will also allow new defensive coordinator
Jim Bates to blitz early and often, knowing both
players can handle any receiver in the league
one-on-one. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan
has also added defensive tackles Sam Adams and
Jimmy Kennedy and cut veteran middle linebacker
Al Wilson.
Analysis: The Broncos look like they could possibly
win double digit games this season while challenging
the San Diego Chargers for the division title.
If Cutler continues his maturation process and
the Broncos play some competent defense this
season, a postseason appearance could be in the
cards.
Football Betting View: Despite going a respectable
9-7 last season, the Broncos only managed to
go 5-11 ATS and 8-8 in O/U wagers. Bettors looking
to betting on the Broncos this season should
fare much better as I expect both, their SU,
ATS and possibly, their O/U record, to all improve
along with the actual product on the field. The
Broncos should be able to put plenty of points
on the board this season with their revamped
offense, particularly later in the season when
Cutler feels more at ease, making their O/U/
wagers even more attractive to bettors.
