The Bengals learned
the hard way that having a high powered offense
simply was not enough. Their defense – and
their NFL betting backers - got torched last
year and was a huge reason the highly touted
Bengals sunk to an 8-8 record. This year, the
team will have to contend with Willis McGahee
joining an already super-powered Ravens team,
painting their future pretty dark.

Carson Palmer is definitely
one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL, but
he has lost one of his favorite weapons for
half the season in Chris Henry. Still, Chad
Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are two of
the very best in the league and get it done.
Tailback Rudi Johnson, who often gets left
off the list of premier backs, is an underrated
workhorse who needs to get more carries in Marvin
Lewis’ pass-first system.
The secondary for
the Bengals can make quarterbacks pay for mistakes.
Adding Leon Hall, the best corner in the draft,
to the likes of Delta O’Neal
and Darrell Jackson is only going to make it
more difficult to throw against the Bengals.
The front seven, on the other hand, present
the bigger problem. They had trouble stopping
the run last year and hardly ever broke in to
the backfield for sacks or carries for losses.
The Bengals have a favorable schedule, but will
have to do a lot to prove that they can contend
with the Ravens in the AFC North. The most important
improvement will be shoring up a defense that
was inconsistent last year.
The Bengals will have trouble winning their
division, let alone making the playoffs in 2007,
despite their relatively high NFL odds in the
BetUS sportsbook.
