NFL Football – The Furious
7 After Week 8

1. New England
Patriots (8-0) Can we just rename the 2007
NFL Season, “The Wrath of Uncle
Bill”? The Patriots are outscoring opponents
by 25.5 points per game and completely embarrassed
a good Redskins team. All of this is going to
blow up in Bilichek’s face if Tom Brady
somehow gets injured when the Patriots are running
up the score in the fourth quarter and he’s
out there for no reason.
Next game: Indianapolis vs. New England (-4)
2. Indianapolis
Colts (7-0) While the Patriots are busy blowing
up the scoreboard, the Colts are playing smarter
football on the offensive side. They control
the clock by pounding the rock and those that
have stuck by the 5-2 ATS Colts should not
feel silly if the word “upset” is
scrolling through their minds. It is a safe bet
that the Colts can keep with the offense of the
Patriots. The real question is if their defense
can get stops when they need it.
Next game: Indianapolis vs. New England (-4)
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) The Steelers simply
smothered the rival Bengals in a 24-13 victory
this past weekend. Hines Ward, who was questionable
with a knee injury, appears to have fully recovered.
He led the way in the first half with two gorgeous
receiving touchdowns. The Steelers have a narrow
lead in the standings, but they are far superior
to the Ravens and Browns who are both 4-3. They
face Baltimore this Monday, then Cleveland next
week.
Next game: Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh (-7.5)
4. Dallas Cowboys
(6-1) They are the best team in the NFC, which
really isn’t saying much
at this point. Coming off a bye week, they venture
to face the Philadelphia Eagles. Their betting
faithful shouldn’t be too concerned until
Week 10 when the Cowboys take on the New York
Giants. It doesn’t quite have the flash
of the Patriots-Colts tilt this week, but you
can never expect too much out of the NFC.
Next game: Dallas (-3) vs. Philadelphia
5. San Diego Chargers
(4-3) How can they be ranked this high with
such a weak record? Simple, they are easily
the fourth best team in the AFC, and could
very well be third. This team took an absurdly
long time to gel with Norv Turner’s
coaching dynamic, but now the defense is taking
over games and Philip Rivers has another viable
receiving threat with Chris “Torture” Chambers.
Rivers is a game manager at best, but if the
defense and special teams devour opposing teams
like they did with Houston, there is no reason
not to believe that San Diego could contend for
the spotlight hogging Colts and Patriots.
Next game: San Diego (-7) vs. Minnesota Vikings
6. New York Giants (6-2) The Giants won an ugly
game in Wembley Stadium against the lowly Dolphins.
Manning was pedestrian with 8-of-22 completed
for 59 yards but the rushing game piled up 189
yards with Brandon Jacobs gaining 5.7 yards per
carry. They have a full two weeks to prepare
for a Week 10 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants are
perhaps the hottest team in the NFC right now
and nobody should be ashamed about jumping
on their betting bandwagon. Could a Manning-Manning
Superbowl be in the making? Right now the Colts
are second-best in the AFC and the Giants are
second-best in the NFC. Stay tuned…
Next game: BYE WEEK
7. Green Bay Packers (6-1) Wow. Brett Favre
pulled off an exhilarating play-action pass to
Greg Jennings to ice the Denver Broncos for the
first time at Invesco Field in his career. Favre
is proving quickly that he is still dependable,
despite being 38 years of age. Favre had 325
yards and two touchdowns against the best passing
game in the league.
Furthermore, the defense continues to be impressive
behind the ferocious play of A.J. Hawk and Nick
Barnett at line-backer. Charles Woodson and Al
Harris are the best defensive-back tandem in
the NFC and that will go a long way in a conference
that is low on game-changing running-backs.
The Packers have
only one loss on the season, and have the league’s worst rushing attack.
Ryan Grant from Notre Dame rumbled for 104 yards
against Denver’s abysmal rushing defense.
If he emerges as a viable rushing threat, this
Packers team will instantly become a balanced
force to be reckoned with. That’s a big “if” though.
Next game: Green Bay (-1) vs. Kansas City
