NFL Football – The Furious
7 After Week 9

Articles
1. New England Patriots (9-0) Indianapolis controlled
the game for three quarters, but then Brady connected
with Randy Moss and Donte Stallworth on two huge
bombs to setup scores that put New England in
the lead. And that is something the betting community
has to take note of. The Patriots can never be
counted out of any game because they can move
the ball down the field insanely fast.
They are the best team in the league, but not
by much. Still, they are the rightful favorite
to win Superbowl XLII in our sportsbook.
Next game: BYE WEEK
2. Indianapolis Colts (7-1)
Despite the loss, Indianapolis is clearly the
second best team in the league. Their defense,
which had been called suspect heading in to
the tilt against New England, came up massively.
They held the Patriots to 24 points and did
a phenomenal job of taking away the deep threat
for the majority of the game.
Bob Sanders has to be at his very best for this
defense to be deadly, but they have no reason
to hang their heads for their efforts this past
weekend. Indianapolis ranks third in points allowed
with 15.8 points per game and allows only 281.5
yards per contest.
Offensively,
this team is incredible and you can not discount
the effect that Marvin Harrison’s
return will have on this team. It changes the
way Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are covered.
The Patriots may have gotten the best of them,
but the Colts know they can hang with them without
their best receiver. With him in the game, it’s
anybody’s bet who wins in the AFC Championship.
Next game: Indianapolis (-3) vs. San Diego
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2)
Pittsburgh’s defense played so well against
lowly Baltimore that Mel Blount called the Ravens “pathetic”.
They nearly blanked the sputtering offense if
not for a touchdown by Willis McGahee in the
38-7 loss. And before Ben Roethlisberger injured
his hip, he had five brilliant touchdown passes
to put the game well out of hand by the end of
the first half.
Pittsburgh has the best defense in the league,
allowing a mind-blowing 237.8 yards per game
and giving up a paltry 12.3 points on average.
Those numbers reflect the strong defensive reputation
of the Steel Curtain, but the offense averages
27.8 points per game as well, good enough for
fifth in the league.
The Colts and Patriots are on a whole other
level. But the Steelers are not far behind. Their
secondary remains suspect, but the emergence
of Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes as reliable
offensive threats gives this team a chance against
the high-octane offenses of the top-2 teams.
Next game: Cleveland vs. Pittsburgh
4. Dallas Cowboys (7-1)
Dallas came roaring out of their bye week to
demolish the Philadelphia Eagles 38-17. Almost
everyone scored for the Cowboys as they ran and
threw all over the Eagles defense. Romo had 324
passing yards and three touchdowns while Terrell
Owens rocked the secondary for 10 catches, 174
yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys get another
crack at the Giants to see if the woes in their
secondary are actually fixed, or if it is still
a glaring weakness on an otherwise solid team.
Next game: Dallas (-1) vs. NYG
5. Green Bay Packers (7-1)
Nobody
could be happier that Brett Favre didn’t
retire than the Packers and their betting faithful.
Green Bay has gone 6-1-1 ATS and remains 7-1
SU, but their division is heating up meaning
that the stretch is going to be tough for the
boys. The Lions are pressing hard for the NFC
North title, but Green Bay must face Adrian Peterson
this weekend, who is coming off a monster game
against the San Diego defense.
Next game: Minnesota vs. Green Bay (-6.5)
6. New York Giants (6-2)
The
Giants get to make believers out of everyone
by clashing with the Cowboys this weekend on
their home turf. Problem is that the oddsmakers
have them as home dogs, so it’s obvious
that they aren’t getting respect despite
going on a six game winning streak.
They’ve had two weeks to prepare for this
game since they had a bye week in Week 9. Plaxico
had a huge game against the Cowboys the last
time around, and Brandon Jacobs has been averaging
a whopping 5.7 yards per carry in the last four
games since his return and has taken pressure
off of Eli Manning to do some damage. The fight
this weekend is not only to keep their playoff
hopes and NFC East title hopes afloat – it’s
also a fight for respect.
Next game: Dallas (-1) vs. NYG
7. Detroit Lions (6-2)
We
knew that the offense could score, but what
on Earth got in to the defense this weekend?
If nothing accentuates how batty this season
has been, Shaun Rogers, a 6-foot-4, 340 pound
defensive tackle, returned an interception
for a 66 yard score while stiff-arming Selvin
Young to the turf. It was easily my favorite
play of the week. And if you think that this
performance by the Lions defense was an anomaly,
don’t
overlook the fact that this team leads the NFL
with 24 turnovers.
The crazy thing about this Mike Martz offense
is the emergence of Kevin Jones, or rather the
re-emergence of Kevin Jones. In his last four
games, Jones has been averaging a steady 4.5
yards per carry. With a balanced offense, a defense
comprised of ball-hawking vultures and a stiff
front-four, the playoffs are not a stretch for
these surprising Lions. And frankly, the fans
in Detroit are due.
It’s
not too late to get on this betting bandwagon
as the Lions are still distant underdogs to
challenge for the NFC Championship. But their
ease of schedule and their scoring firepower
should warrant some of your betting love.
Next game: Detroit (-1) vs. Arizona Cardinals
