Final Score: Indianapolis 29, Jacksonville
7
Jacksonville,
FL (MySportsbook) - Peyton Manning threw
for one touchdown and ran for another score,
as Indianapolis remained unbeaten with a 29-7
romp over the injury-riddled Jacksonville Jaguars.
Manning completed 23-of-37 passes for 259 yards
and was picked off once. Reggie Wayne caught
nine passes for 131 yards for the Colts (6-0),
who remained with New England as the only unbeaten
teams left this season. They will clash in
Indianapolis November 4. The defending Super
Bowl champions have won 11 in a row going back
to last year, including their run through the
playoffs. The Colts joined Green Bay (1929-31)
and St. Louis (1999-2001) as the only teams in
history to start 6-0 three straight years. Indianapolis
got a boost with the return of two offensive
stars and a defensive standout. Wide receiver
Marvin Harrison (knee), running back Joseph Addai
(shoulder) and safety Bob Sanders (ribs) missed
the October 7 game against Tampa Bay, and they
had extra time to rest with a bye last week.
Harrison had three receptions for 16 yards and
Addai ran 16 times for 85 yards, while Sanders
had an interception. Jaguars quarterback David
Garrard left the game briefly in the second quarter
due to a sprained left ankle and then sat out
the second half. Before that, he completed 8-of-12
passes for 72 yards. Quinn Gray replaced Garrard
and connected on 9-of-24 passes, but was picked
off twice, as Jacksonville (4-2) had a four-game
winning streak broken. Maurice Jones-Drew ran
13 times for 52 yards, but he limped off the
field with a sprained left knee after taking
a hit in the final two minutes. Fred Taylor ran
for 55 yards in a losing cause.
Final Score: Detroit
23, Tampa Bay 16
Detroit, MI -- (Sports Network) - Jon Kitna
completed 16-of-20 passes for 147 yards and Calvin
Johnson provided the game-winning touchdown with
a 32-yard fourth-quarter touchdown scamper as
the Detroit Lions held on for a 23-16 win over
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Ford Field. Kevin
Jones rushed 15 times for 76 yards and a touchdown
and also caught six passes for 34 yards, while
Johnson added two catches for 37 yards. Detroit
(4-2) controlled the ball for just 24 minutes,
but forced a pair of costly Buccaneer turnovers
and also blocked a punt on its way to establishing
a 23-7 lead. Jeff Garcia was remarkably accurate,
completing 37-of-45 pass attempts -- including
a franchise-record tying 18 in a row during the
first half -- for 316 yards and a pair of touchdowns,
but the Bucs (4-3) squandered multiple scoring
opportunities and were victimized by seven penalties
for 60 yards. Earnest Graham rushed 19 times
for 92 yards and also tied a franchise record
with 13 catches for 99 yards, but like much of
the Tampa offense, couldn't find his way into
the end zone.
Final Score: Tennessee 38, Houston 36
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Rob Bironas'
NFL record eighth field goal of the game -- a
29-yarder as time expired -- gave the Tennessee
Titans a wild 38-36 win over the Houston Texans
at Reliant Stadium. Bironas hit on field goals
of 52, 25, 21, 30, 43 and 28 yards and two from
29 yards out to break the previous record shared
by Jim Bakken, Rich Karlis, Billy Cundiff and
Chris Boniol. Kerry Collins completed 25-of-42
passes for 280 yards with no touchdowns and no
interceptions and White rushed for 104 yards
and a score for the Titans (4-2). Houston quarterback
Matt Schaub hurt his left ankle in the first
quarter, returned after a brief absence and then
left the game for a good after a vicious hit
from Titans defensive end Albert Haynesworth
in the second quarter. Sage Rosenfels threw for
290 yards and four touchdowns for the Texans
(3-4), but finished with four turnovers - three
interceptions and a fumble.
Final Score: New England 49, Miami 28
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Tom Brady threw
for 354 yards and a career-high six touchdowns,
leading the undefeated New England Patriots to
a 49-28 rout of the winless Miami Dolphins. The
Patriots (7-0) had struggled recently at Dolphin
Stadium, with seven losses in their last nine
visits, but this is an extremely confident New
England team and a reeling Dolphin squad. The
Pats have now won 10 straight regular-season
games dating back to last season and have opened
a year with seven straight wins for the first
time in club history, while Miami (0-7) has dropped
10 in a row going back to 2006 and is off to
its worst start in franchise history. Brady,
in particular, has had problems with the Miami
defense. His quarterback rating of 68.2 in the
past six meetings was well below his usual standards,
but on Sunday he completed 21-of-25 passes without
an interception for a rating of 158.3. His 27
TD passes this season are just one shy of his
single-season best of 28, set in 2002 and matched
in 2004. Randy Moss and Wes Welker each had more
than 100 yards receiving and two scores. Welker,
traded from Miami to New England for a pair of
draft picks this past March, caught a team-best
nine passes for 138 yards, while Moss had four
receptions for 122. Cleo Lemon struggled in his
second start this season as the Miami quarterback,
throwing for 236 yards with an interception and
no touchdowns on 24-of-37 passing.
Final Score: NY Giants 33, San Francisco 15
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Eli Manning
threw a pair of touchdown passes and Brandon
Jacobs ran for 107 yards with a score, as the
New York Giants rolled to a 33-15 victory over
the San Francisco 49ers at the Meadowlands. The
Giants (5-2) have won five in a row to match
their longest winning streak under head coach
Tom Coughlin. New York also won five straight
last season from October 8 through November 5.
Manning completed just 18-of-31 passes for 146
yards, but was aided greatly by a New York defense
that forced four turnovers from San Francisco
quarterback Trent Dilfer. Osi Umenyiora had two
fumble recoveries for the Giants, returning one
for a touchdown. Dilfer threw a pair of interceptions,
fumbled twice and was sacked six times, as San
Francisco again played without injured quarterback
Alex Smith. Smith was sidelined for the second
straight game with a shoulder separation. The
49ers (2-4), coming off a bye, have lost four
in a row after opening the season with two straight
wins.
Final Score: New Orleans 22, Atlanta 16
New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Drew Brees
threw for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns
as New Orleans outlasted Atlanta, 22-16, at the
Superdome. After falling behind 16-14 early in
the fourth quarter, Brees and the Saints (2-4)
offense calmly went 69 yards on 11 plays to take
the lead. Brees capped the impressive drive by
finding Reggie Bush on a quick hitch for a four-yard
score with 5:04 left. The former Heisman Trophy
winner then took the two-point conversion in
on a brilliant reverse to make it 22-16. Brees
completed 22- of-34 passes for New Orleans, while
Bush ran for 54 yards and added five receptions
for 19 yards and the TD. The game featured the
debut of Byron Leftwich as the starting quarterback
for the Falcons (1-6). Leftwich replaced Joey
Harrington, who was given the reigns of the Atlanta
offense in training camp when Michael Vick was
suspended indefinitely by the NFL because of
his alleged involvement in a Virginia dogfighting
ring. The former Marshall star was 15-of-23 for
145 yards and a touchdown before leaving the
game with a right ankle injury in the third quarter.
Harrington came on from there and finished 12-of-18
for 128 yards. Roddy White had eight receptions
for 110 yards and a TD for Atlanta, which is
off to its worst start since the 2003 squad won
its season opener before dropping the next seven
contests.
Final Score: Washington 21, Arizona 19
Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Neil Rackers'
55-yard field goal attempt at the end of regulation
hooked just wide left, as the Washington Redskins
hung on after a wild finish for a 21-19 win over
the Arizona Cardinals. Tim Rattay came off the
bench and threw a one-yard touchdown pass to
Leonard Pope with 21 seconds remaining to pull
the Cardinals within two points, but, on a curious
play call by Arizona, wideout Anquan Boldin lined
up under center on the two- point attempt, and
his pass for Larry Fitzgerald was intercepted
by LaRon Landry in the end zone. The Cardinals
recovered the onside kick, though, giving them
one more chance. Kurt Warner completed two passes
to move to the Washington 37-yard line with seven
seconds left, but Rackers' kick, which had plenty
of leg, was pulled just a bit to the left of
the upright, and Washington survived. Jason Campbell
completed 12-of-18 passes for just 95 yards with
an interception, leading a tepid Washington offense
that managed only 160 total yards. Clinton Portis
gained only 43 yards on 18 carries but scored
twice for the Redskins (4-2). Warner started
for Arizona and completed 27-of-41 passes for
282 yards and two touchdowns, but had two costly
interceptions for the Cardinals (3-4), who have
dropped two straight games after winning two
in a row.
Final Score: Buffalo 19, Baltimore 14
Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - Marshawn
Lynch rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown, and
Rian Lindell booted four field goals as Buffalo
edged Baltimore 19-14. Rookie Trent Edwards finished
11-for-21 for 153 yards with an interception
in his third-career start for the Bills (2-4),
who have won two of their past three games. Lee
Evans had five receptions for 98 yards. Ex- Bills
star Willis McGahee returned to Buffalo and had
114 yards rushing and a touchdown on 19 carries
for the Ravens (4-3), who lost for the first
time in three contests. Backup Kyle Boller, making
his second straight start at quarterback in place
of the injured Steve McNair, connected on 21-of-36
passes for 191 yards and a touchdown.
Final Score: Cincinnati 38, NY Jets 31
Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Backup running
back Kenny Watson rushed for 130 yards and three
touchdowns as the Cincinnati Bengals used a second-half
surge to beat the New York Jets, 38-31. Carson
Palmer completed 14-of-21 passes for 226 yards
with a touchdown and an interception for the
Bengals (2-4), who used 28 straight points in
the second half to win for the first time since
the first week of the season. Chad Johnson had
three catches for 102 yards for Cincinnati, while
T.J. Houshmandzadeh had four catches for 43 yards
and a score. Watson got the start in place of
Rudi Johnson, who is missed the game with a hamstring
injury. Jets quarter Chad Pennington completed
20-of-31 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns,
but threw a critical interception in the fourth
quarter that was returned by Johnathan Joseph
for a touchdown. Laveranues Coles had eight catches
for 133 yards and two touchdowns for New York
(1-6), while Thomas Jones rushed for 67 yards
on 19 carries.
Final Score: Kansas City 12, Oakland 10
Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Larry Johnson
rushed 24 times for 112 yards and a score, and
the Kansas City Chiefs held on for a 12-10 win
over the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders got the
ball back with 1:46 left at their own 26-yard-
line, and Daunte Culpepper completed three passes
to move to the Oakland 44- yard-line, but he
was intercepted by Jarrad Page, sealing the win
for the Chiefs. Damon Huard went 16-of-31 for
177 yards and an interception, and Dwayne Bowe
had three catches for 84 yards for the Chiefs
(4-3), who won for the third time in four weeks.
Culpepper completed 18-of-29 passes for 228 yards
with one touchdown and one interception for the
Raiders (2-4), who dropped their second straight
after winning two in a row. LaMont Jordan was
held to 29 yards on 11 carries. Zach Miller had
four catches for 48 yards, and Ronald Curry gained
45 yards on four catches with a score for Oakland,
which lost to the Chiefs for the ninth straight
time.
Final Score: Dallas 24, Minnesota 14
Irving, TX (Sports Network) - Patrick Watkins
returned a blocked field goal 68 yards for the
go-ahead touchdown and the Dallas Cowboys went
on to defeat the Minnesota Vikings, 24-14, at
Texas Stadium. Watkins' return broke a 14-14
stalemate and was part of a string of 17 straight
points scored by Dallas (6-1), which recovered
from last week's 48-27 loss to the Patriots to
remain one game ahead of the New York Giants
in the NFC East. Tony Romo completed an incredible
31-of-39 passes for 277 yards with one touchdown.
Terrell Owens had seven catches for 103 yards
with a score and Marion Barber ran for 96 yards
and a TD for the Cowboys, who benefited greatly
from Minnesota's lack of offense. The Cowboys
held Vikings running back Adrian Peterson to
only 63 yards and a TD rushing, one week after
the rookie exploded for a franchise record 224
yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 win over
Chicago. Tarvaris Jackson completed only 6-of-19
passes for just 72 yards for the Vikings (2-4),
who have lost four of five.
Final Score: Chicago 19, Philadelphia 16
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Brian Griese
engineered an 11-play, 97- yard drive in the
final two minutes, capped by a 15-yard touchdown
pass to Muhsin Muhammad with nine seconds left
to lead the Chicago Bears to a stunning, come-from-behind
win, 19-16, over the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln
Financial Field. Brian Griese finished the game
27-for-41 passing for 322 yards and the one touchdown,
but the Bears offense had been unable to punch
the ball into the end zone leading up to their
final drive. Muhammad had five catches for 79
yards, including the game-winning score, while
Hester, neutralized in the return game, caught
three passes for 41 yards. Chicago (3-4) also
got four field goals from kicker Robbie Gould
and a gritty bounce- back performance from its
defense, which allowed 334 yards of total offense
but held the Eagles to just one touchdown in
four trips to the red zone. Donovan McNabb completed
21-of-34 passes for 226 yards and a score, while
Brian Westbrook carried 18 times for 79 yards
and also had six receptions for 40 yards. David
Akers was 3-for-3 on field goals and Kevin Curtis
caught five passes for 62 yards, but the Eagles
(2-4) sputtered in scoring position and again
exhibited poor clock management as they fell
solidly into last place in the NFC East.
Final Score: Seattle 33, St. Louis 6
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Matt Hasselbeck
threw for 195 yards on 18-of-35 passing with
two touchdowns to lead Seattle past St. Louis,
33-6, at Qwest Field to keep the Rams winless.
Darryl Tapp notched four sacks with a forced
fumble for the Seahawks (4-3), who avoided losing
their third straight contest. Seattle's defense
came up huge with seven sacks, three interceptions
and two forced fumbles while limiting St. Louis
to just 53 yards rushing. Will Heller caught
two touchdown passes and Bobby Engram added six
receptions for 73 yards in the victory. Marc
Bulger returned after missing the last two games
with bruised ribs and struggled, completing 21-of-40
passes for 225 yards with three interceptions
for the Rams (0-7), who are now off to their
worst start in franchise history. Torry Holt
had eight catches for 82 yards in defeat.
Final Score: Denver 31, Pittsburgh 28
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jason Elam's 49-yard
field goal as time expired lifted the Denver
Broncos to a 31-28 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers
at Invesco Field. Pittsburgh had scored consecutive
touchdowns to tie the game, with the last one
coming with 70 seconds left. That was plenty
of time for Denver, which started the drive with
the ball at the 20. On the first play of the
drive, Jay Cutler hit Tony Scheffler for 16 yards.
An 11-yard reception to Glenn Martinez got the
ball into Pittsburgh territory. Denver was then
helped by instant replay as a nine-yard catch
from Daniel Graham was initially ruled incomplete,
but the replay reversed the call and Denver had
the ball at the Steelers 30. Two plays later,
Elam split the uprights for the win. Cutler finished
the game 22-for-29 with 248 yards with three
touchdowns and two interceptions while Brandon
Stokley had five catches for 70 yards and a score
for the Broncos (3-3), who stopped a three-game
losing streak. Denver played the game without
Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, who missed
the game with a left thigh injury. It was just
the third time in his nine-year career that he
missed a game. Ben Roethlisberger went 24- for-35
with 290 yards and four touchdowns, but he also
had two interceptions and lost a fumble that
Tim Crowder returned for a touchdown. Willie
Parker had 21 carries for 93 yards for the Steelers
(4-2), who have dropped two of their last three.
