Final Score: Chicago
39, New Orleans 14
Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook)
- Thomas Jones ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns
as the Chicago Bears defeated the New Orleans
Saints, 39-14, in the NFC Championship Game at
Soldier Field. Cedric Benson added 60 yards and
a touchdown on a career-high 24 carries for the
Bears, who will be making their first trip to
the Super Bowl since throttling the New England
Patriots 21 years ago in Super Bowl XX. Like the
1985 Bears, this Chicago team also leaned heavily
on its defense, which forced four turnovers and
a safety in this contest. The Bears defense also
held the Saints to only 56 rushing yards and sacked
Saints quarterback Drew Brees three times.
Rex Grossman didn't lose
the game for the Bears as was feared after a lackluster
end to the season, and surprisingly relied on
his arm during one key second-half drive, as Chicago
scored the final 23 points of the game to turn
a slim 16-14 lead into a blowout victory. Grossman
finished 11-of-26 for only 144 yards with one
touchdown and no interceptions.
Brees finished 27- of-49
for 354 yards with two touchdowns and one interception
for the Saints, who were playing in their first
conference championship game in franchise history.
Final Score: Indianapolis
38, New England 34
Indianapolis, IN (My Sportsbook)
- Peyton Manning exorcised his personal demon,
and punched Indianapolis' ticket to the Super
Bowl in the process. The highly-touted signal-caller,
who was just as renowned for his postseason failures
as his regular-season accomplishments, engineered
the largest comeback in championship game history,
as the Colts edged the New England Patriots, 38-34,
in the AFC Championship Game at the RCA Dome.
Manning and the Colts dug out of an 18-point hole
and fought back to tie it on three separate occasions
before taking their first lead of the game with
one minute left on a three-yard run by Joseph
Addai. Tom Brady tried to orchestrate a late-scoring
drive, getting the ball back with 54 ticks on
the clock and a pair of time outs, but Marlin
Jackson came up with a big interception to ice
the game. Manning ended 27-of-47 for 349 yards
with a touchdown and an interception for Indianapolis,
which had its playoff runs cut short by Brady
and New England both in 2003 and '04. Manning
also added a rushing touchdown, while Dallas Clark
hauled in six catches for 137 yards. Brady went
21-of-34 for 232 yards with a touchdown and a
pick for the Patriots, who fell to 12-2 in the
playoffs in the Bill Belichick/Brady era.
