Rumors/Response
September 14, 2007
The latest from around the NFL . . .
Quarterbacks were dropping like flies around the
league in Week 1, and many fantasy owners will have
some tough decisions to make prior to Sunday.
In New York, the Jets are expected to be without
Chad Pennington this weekend, thanks to the ankle
injury he suffered in the loss to the Patriots. Kellen
Clemens has been running the first-team offense in
practice, and he's penciled in to start on Sunday
versus Baltimore.
And in New York, the Giants could be without Eli
Manning this week after he missed Wednesday and Thursday
practice with his shoulder injury. Reports have varied
from 'day-to-day' to 'three-to-four weeks' for Manning,
so until someone comes forward with an official statement
he probably should be benched. Jared Lorenzen is
the top candidate to start in Manning's place.
Out in Oakland, Josh McCown has been rumored to
have a cracked index finger, a toe injury, a sprained
ankle, and a sprained foot, but he's also been well
enough to play during drills this week. Daunte Culpepper
has been preparing with the first team as well at
Raiders practice, but you'd probably be better off
avoiding them both.
Finally, in Cleveland, Charlie Frye wasn't dropped
by an injury - but he was dropped from the Browns'
roster when they dealt him to the Seahawks. That
makes Derek Anderson the starter this weekend, but
Brady Quinn owners shouldn't have to wait too much
longer for the highly-touted rookie to see some action
- his debut could come this week if Anderson struggles.
Bucs running back Cadillac Williams managed to return
to practice Thursday, and it's possible that he'll
play in the team's contest against the Saints.
Williams ran for 60 yards on 12 carries against
the Seahawks, but left the game in the third quarter
with bruised ribs. Originally Williams was expected
to miss this week's game (with Michael Pittman taking
over as the starter), but he could now see action.
And if you have Cowboys wide receiver Terry Glenn
stashed somewhere on your fantasy roster you can
now drop him to waivers and find yourself a replacement.
The veteran wideout underwent knee surgery on Thursday
afternoon, and even though it was the 'good' kind
(arthroscopic, instead of microfracture) he's still
questionable to return in 2007. Patrick Crayton is
now the starter.
