Horse captured nation's attention
with failed run at Triple Crown
LEXINGTON,
Ky. (AP) - Smarty Jones is a new papa.
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness
winner had his first foal, Three Chimneys Farm
said Tuesday. The bay filly, whose mother is
Shoppingwithbetty, was born at Stone Farm.
“We’re very excited about the foal,”
Stone Farm owner Arthur Hancock said. “A
lot of work goes into bringing a foal into the
world, and it’s wonderful to have a good-looking
one like this. She has good bone and a lot of
substance. She’s balanced and she’s
quite a bright and intelligent-acting filly.”
Smarty Jones, whose championship
run in 2004 captivated racing fans, commands
a $100,000 stud fee. Currently 91 mares besides
Shoppingwithbetty are pregnant with his foals.
Shoppingwithbetty, owned by Hancock
and Tom Tatham of Oak Cliff Stables, was due
to foal Jan. 19. Her father was Danzig, who
was euthanized last week.
“It’s great to have
Smarty Jones’ first foal on the ground,”
said Robert Clay, owner of Three Chimneys. “We’ve
been looking forward to this all year.”
