Eclipse Award Winners
LOS ANGELES
(Reuters) --- Breeders'
Cup Classic winner Saint Liam picked up the
2005 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year on
Monday, easily outpolling Afleet Alex for the
honor.
The five-year-old son of Saint
Ballado, Saint Liam won a stretch duel with
Flower Alley last October to capture the 1 1/4-mile
$4.7 million Classic, North America's richest
race.
Saint Liam had 194 first-place
votes, followed by Preakness and Belmont Stakes
winner Afleet Alex, who had 56 votes in balloting
by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association/Equibase,
the Daily Racing Form and the National Turf
Writers Association.
No other horse received more
than one first-place vote.
Trained by Richard Dutrow and
ridden by Jerry Bailey, Saint Liam was retired
to stud after the Classic with nine wins in
20 starts with earnings of $4,456,995. His Classic
haul of $2,433,600 was more than he earned in
19 prior starts.
Saint Liam, also winner of the
older male award, had won three Grade I races
in 2005 entering the Breeders' Cup -- the Donn
Handicap, the Stephen Foster Handicap and the
Woodward.
While losing out on Horse of
the Year honors, Afleet Alex did manage to win
the Eclipse Award for three-year-old colts.
