WEEK 11 nfl update: Here Come the Road Dogs
by: Betus.com
That’s not hurricanes
and lightning you hear on the horizon; it’s
the March of the Underdogs, and they’re
coming to your town.
After well over a year of
home favorites cashing in left and right, road
dogs finally turned the tables in Week 10, going
7-6 straight up and a bankroll-swelling 9-4 against
the spread. And we appear to have some continued
interest in puppies for Week 11, judging by some
of the recent NFL line moves.
The most interesting news
from a handicapping perspective is in Baltimore,
where Ravens middle LB Ray Lewis had minor surgery
on Thursday and is expected to miss Sunday’s
matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The Ravens
have moved from 6-point home favorites at the
open to just four points. Assuming Lewis does
miss the game (he remains listed as questionable,
although team officials are pessimistic about
a quick recovery), inside LB Bart Scott will move
to the middle and LB/DE Jarret Johnson will shift
from outside to inside. But that line dance is
nothing compared to what the injury-riddled Falcons
have to do to field a defense this week. The Ravens’
offense under Steve McNair should be able to find
the pay window, Lewis or no Lewis.

The other notable line change
is in Kansas City, where Trent Green has been
named the starting quarterback for the Chiefs
as they prepare to host the Oakland Raiders. That
announcement saw Kansas City fall from an 11.5-point
chalk to 9.5 points. Damon Huard was a beast in
Green’s absence, posting a 97.6 QB rating.
That’s only a shade better than Green’s
results over his last four years with the Chiefs,
but this week Green is playing his first game
since suffering a major concussion in the season
opener, and he’ll be without the services
of tight end Tony Gonzalez.
Oakland’s underappreciated
defense is a solid threat to grab the green from
Green on Sunday.
There is one road dog that’s
not getting much love this week: the Detroit Lions.
They were a popular pick last week, but they lost
19-13 to San Francisco in the friendly confines
of Ford Field. They’ve since moved from
1-point puppies at the Arizona Cardinals to two
points.
You know things are going
poorly for the Lions when they lose steam to the
1-7 Cardinals. But Arizona does welcome back receiver
Larry Fitzgerald in this matchup, one of the top
wideouts in the game today. Cards QB Matt Leinart
should finally break through with his first NFL
victory after three consecutive poor outings.
