At the beginning of the year,
no one circled the Georgia Tech and Clemson game
on their calendar as a potential ACC championship
game preview. However, both schools have bounced
back from early season defeats to take their place
atop the conference standings heading into Saturday's
contest at Clemson Memorial Stadium.
Both the No. 12 Tigers (6-1
SU & ATS) and No. 13 Yellow Jackets (5-1 SU
& ATS) have won five in a row, with each squad
knocking off ACC foes who were considered title
contenders back in August.
The Tigers are the highest-scoring
team in the nation, averaging 43.9 ppg, and sixth
nationally in total offense, posting 459.0 yards.
Running back James Davis is tied for first in
the country with 14 rushing TDs.
Clemson rolled winless Temple
63-9 on Oct. 12 while Georgia Tech had a bye last
week, leaving each team well-rested. The Tigers
didn't play their starters long against the Owls,
with most departing after the first half.
The Yellow Jackets are the
ACC's only team with an undefeated conference
record, sitting atop the Coastal Division by 1.5
games after winning five straight following a
hard-fought 14-10 loss to then-No. 2 Notre Dame
in the season opener.
Clemson is looking for its
first ACC title since 1991, while Georgia Tech
hasn't won the conference crown since 1998. The
Yellow Jackets' last outright ACC championship
came in 1990, the same year they won a share of
the national championship.
This is the first matchup
where both teams are ranked since 1991, when No.
7 Clemson beat No. 19 Georgia Tech 9-7. It's only
the second meeting of top 13 teams in the 64-year
history of Memorial Stadium.
Clemson won four straight
in this series from 1993-96 before Georgia Tech
posted four consecutive wins. The Tigers came
back with three victories in a row from 2001-03,
but the Yellow Jackets have won the last two meetings
SU, including a 10-9 victory in Atlanta last season.
Georgia Tech enters Clemson
Memorial Stadium as the TD puppies but away from
home they are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as
a road underdog of 3.5-10.0. Astonishingly, the
underdog is 11-0 ATS in their last 11 meetings
between these two. Georgia Tech leads the all-time
series SU 45-23-2.
Notable game trends:
- Yellow Jackets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
- Yellow Jackets are 8-2 ATS in their last 10
games following a ATS loss.
- Yellow Jackets are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road
games.
- Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.
- Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- Tigers are 1-7-2 ATS in their last 10 games
as a favorite of 3.5-10.0.
- Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
