Callers
are drawers Players that flat call
are generally holding a drawing hand. If the
table is big enough a late caller gets really
good odds for what was at the outset a pot
bet. The player with a made hand who started
the betting won't like that at all. This is
especially true when you play
online poker.
Avoid
check-raising A lot of people see check-raising
as the solution to this problem. With the
exception of a few specific situations we
don't like that strategy very much. In order
to understand this you have to first understand
that one of the reasons for betting is to
buy information. If you check a no one bets
the information is overpriced.
Sonar
bets Submarines use sonar to identify
and sink their adversaries. You should try
to be like a submarine. Sonar works this way:
they send out a small 'ping,' upon its reflection
and return it has a new vector. One of the
situations in which we think you should use
a sonar type bet is when you know you get
to bet more if you want to. In a way, it's
like string betting (with a payoff).
Short
stacks Imagine this scenario: there
is a short stack sitting at your table, with
a really small chip stack. You bet half his
stack. The short stack is pot committed since
he called pre-flop; he either knows that raising
gives him a chance to shorten his list of
opponents or he feels that it is just what
he may as well do. Whatever the underlying
reasoning is the short stack will almost always
raise in situations like this.
Force
the drawers out The perfect situation
is when the short stack is on the button and
you get to see if everyone else just flat
called your small bet. This most likely means
that they want as cheap a draw as they possible
can get. Then when the short stack raises
you should re-raise all in or max (if it's
a pot limit game). If the short stack was
in the middle or right after you, you still
get to see how the other players react to
the raise. They might re-raise, usually maximum
or minimum. This will tell you know if you
only thought you had the best hand or if you
will be paid off when you have the nuts (the
best possible hand).
Why not try your some sonar
betting the next time you play at Pacific
Poker.
