league.
However, the last couple of weeks have closed
the gap between these teams (at least a bit),
and the Monday nighter might end up watchable.
That's not to say the Seahawks
aren't favored in this game, and by a pretty decent
margin. Oddsmakers opened Seattle as 6.5-point
home favorites against their opponent from the
other conference, and that line moved to the Seahawks
-7 (and -7.5 at some books) over the course of
the week. The game's total is currently listed
at just 37 points.
But thanks to some injuries,
and some signs of life, these are two teams going
in opposite directions right now. The Raiders
started the season with losses in each of their
first five games, and quickly were given the labels
of 'the league's worst team' and
'biggest embarrassment'. However, they've since
bounced back with two wins in a row.
That, of course, doesn't
mean the Raiders are suddenly looking like one
of the league's elite teams. Their first victory
of the season came two weeks ago against an Arizona
Cardinals team that's been trying to grab those
aforementioned labels for themselves. Oakland
scored 14 points in the first quarter in that
game, and cruised to a 22-9 victory.
Last week Oakland made it
two straight wins by bouncing the defending Super
Bowl champions 20-13. That win, though, was impressive
for the Raiders only on the scoreboard. Starting
QB Andrew Walter went just 5-of-14 for 51 yards
passing and an interception, and the Raiders scored
one of their TDs off an interception return. In
fact, the team's best offensive performance was
Justin Fargas' mere 55-yard rushing effort.
Still, two straight wins
is two straight wins. And two straight losses
is two straight losses, which is Seattle's current
streak. The Seahawks have lost back-to-back games
against the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City
Chiefs, getting outscored 31-13 and 35-28 in those
contests. That stretch dropped Seattle's mark
from 4-1, to just above .500 at 4-3.
And a lot of Seattle's troubles
can be explained with a glance at the top of their
injury report this week, as both RB Shaun Alexander
(foot) and QB Matt Hasselbeck (knee) are still
listed as OUT. As well, WR Bobby Engram (illness)
is QUESTIONABLE, but still isn't expected to play
Monday night. WR Darrell Jackson (foot) is likely
to take the field.
So with the Seahawks' offense
so banged up, will the Raiders be able to roll
to a third straight victory? Former starting QB
Aaron Brooks (shoulder) is DOUBTFUL for the week,
with Walter already announced as the Monday night
starter. RB LaMont Jordan (back) is listed as
QUESTIONABLE, but is also expected to be on the
field after kickoff. Walter and Jordan will likely
be the key to any success the Raiders have Monday
night.
The last time these teams
met was way back in September 2002, when the Raiders
came away with a 31-17 home win as a 7-point favorite.
This season Oakland is 3-4 against-the-spread
overall, 1-2 ATS on the road, and 3-4 ATS as the
underdog. Seattle is 2-5 ATS overall, 2-1 ATS
at home, and 2-3 ATS as the favored team. As for
totals, the Raiders are 2-4-1 OVER/UNDER so far
this year, while the Seahawks are 5-2 OU.

next week. Oakland will host the division-rival
Denver Broncos at Network Associates Coliseum,
while the Seahawks will get a visit from the St.
Louis Rams at Qwest Field.
