Night Football - Monday, DECEMBER 4TH
by: VIP.com
The
Carolina Panthers fell off the pace in the NFC
South by losing to the Washington Redskins last
weekend. Steve Smith and company will be looking
to make some amends for that loss by beating a
different NFC East opponent, the Philadelphia
Eagles, when those teams meet at Lincoln Financial
Field for a Monday Night Football matchup.
And starting QB Jake Delhomme
will be looking to turn in a better performance
against the Eagles than he did versus the Redskins.
Delhomme went just 23-of-38 for 168 yards against
Washington, with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.
In fact, that TD strike (eight yards to Smith)
didn't come until the fourth quarter; the Panthers'
offense was held to just a couple of field goals
over the first three frames by the lowly Redskins.
Smith had five catches for
34 yards in the 17-13 defeat, while DeAngelo Williams
rushed for 63 yards on 17 carries. The Panthers'
defense held 'Skins QB Jason Campbell to 118 yards
passing, but he threw two TDs. Ladell Betts ran
for 104 yards.
That loss dropped the Panthers
to a disappointing 6-5 on the season, but luckily
for Carolina that's a pretty good record in a
weak NFC. The Panthers haven't been kind to bettors
through 11 games, going just 4-6-1 against-the-spread.
Carolina is also just 1-3-1 ATS on the road this
season, and they're 3-5 ATS as the favorite. OVER
bettors have lost cash on the Panthers so far
too; Carolina has put up eight UNDER results this
year.
The Eagles are coming off
a loss as well - in fact, their 45-21 defeat at
the hands of the Indianapolis Colts last weekend
was their second straight notch in the loss column.
Jeff Garcia was an efficient 19-of-23 for Philadelphia
versus Indy, for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
However, the Colts were up 24-7 at the break in
that game, and 31-7 late in the third quarter,
and cruised to the victory (dropping Philly's
record to 5-6 in 2006).
Brian Westbrook provided
much of the offense for Philadelphia in that loss,
rushing for 124 yards (and a touchdown) on 20
carries, and also catching seven balls for 46
yards. Garcia strained his forearm late in the
loss to Indy, but is listed as PROBABLE for the
Monday nighter. Westbrook and his sore knee have
been listed as PROBABLE as well.
Philadelphia has managed
to cover the spread five times this season, giving
them a 5-6 ATS mark through 11 games. At home
the Eagles are 3-3 ATS in 2006, and they're 0-1
ATS as the underdog. As well, Philadelphia has
gone 7-4 on the OVER/UNDER in '06.
The oddsmakers opened Carolina
as a 3-point road favorite in their Monday night
matchup with Philly, and that line has not changed.
The total is pegged at 37.5 points.
Philadelphia and Carolina
have met on the gridiron five times in the past,
with the Eagles winning three of those five games.
Their most recent meeting was in October 2004,
when Philadelphia trounced Carolina 30-8 at home.
The Eagles easily managed to cover the big 9.5-point
spread in that contest, while the combined score
was an UNDER play. The Panthers got past the Eagles
14-3 in Philadelphia in January 2004.

After playing on the road
on Monday night the Panthers will return to Bank
of America Stadium for a Week 14 game against
the New York Giants. The Eagles' next contest
will be on the road; they'll take on the Redskins
in Washington early Sunday afternoon.
