2006 NFL FREE AGENTS

UFA: Unrestricted Free Agent; a player who has completed four or more accrued seasons and whose contract has expired. They are free to sign with any other team until the first day of training camp that summer. On that date if they have not signed with another team, their exclusive rights remain with their original club if that club made a June 1 tender offer to the player. Teams have until the 10th week of the season to sign their unrestricted free agent as long as they made their tender offer by June 1. In that scenario, if the player does not sign with his original team by the tenth week of the season, he must continue to sit out for the rest of the season. If no June 1 tender offer is made, the player remains able to sign with any team at any time. The signing period begins March 2 and concludes on the first scheduled day of training camp.

RFA: Restricted Free Agent; a player who has completed three accrued seasons and whose contract has expired. A Restricted Free Agent is a player that has completed three seasons in the NFL and whose contracts have expired. They have received qualifying offers from their old team and are free to negotiate with other teams until April 15 when their rights revert to their original team. If a player accepts an offer from a new team, his old team may match the offer and retain the player.

Eleven players with three or more accrued seasons have been designated as non-exclusive franchise players. The old club has a right of first refusal to the players listed below and compensation of two No. 1 draft choices. In order to submit an offer sheet, a new club must have available the required choices, defined as its own or better choices in the first round in the 2005 and 2006 NFL Drafts (or 2007, if applicable).
