Gridiron - October 23, 2006 by: VIP.com In January of 1974, the Notre
Dame men’s basketball team ended the 88
game winning streak of Bill Walton and the UCLA
Bruins. On Saturday, the UCLA football team almost
returned the favor before losing to the Fighting
Irish, 20-17 in South Bend UCLA was feeling pretty good
about themselves up 17-13 with only 62 seconds
to play. The Bruins had stymied Brady Quinn’s
offense all day, and now Notre Dame had to go
80 yards for a touchdown. Turns out that was exactly
the motivation that Notre Dame needed. Quinn hit
wide receiver, Jeff Samardzija for a 21 yard pass
on the sidelines to stop the clock. He then completed
a 14 yard pass to David Grimes. Finally, a 45
yard touchdown pass to Samardzija sealed the deal
and the improbable comeback victory. The win moved the Irish to
6-1 and kept their National Championship hopes
alive. UCLA dropped to 4-3 on the year, but they
acquitted themselves nicely, and they should give
undefeated USC a battle later in the year. Elsewhere around the Top
10, number one ranked Ohio State had no trouble
with Indiana, 44-3. Third ranked Michigan needed
a 10-0 spurt in the fourth quarter to put away
pesky Iowa, 20-6. Another marquee game on the
docket was Texas traveling to Nebraska to face
the Cornhuskers. This was kind of a sloppy game
with Nebraska having three turnovers and Texas
missing two makeable field goals and an extra
point. The game came down to a chip-shot field
goal for the Longhorns, and this time they made
it, and escaped with a 22-20 victory. 6th ranked Louisville remained
undefeated with a 28-13 win at Syracuse. This
was a 7-6 Louisville lead at halftime and some
were wondering if Louisville’s magical ride
was about to come to a crashing halt. Instead,
the Cardinals controlled the second half and their
collision course with West Virginia is still scheduled
for a week from Thursday. In the ACC, the changing
of the guard continues with BC winning at Florida
State, 24-19. Clemson also continued to establish
themselves as a contender for the conference championship.
The Tigers had a very convincing 31-7 home win
over Georgia Tech, with James Davis rushing for
216 yards on the ground. Taking a sneak peek at this
coming weekend, Clemson is at Virginia Tech in
a huge Thursday night game. Miami is at Georgia
Tech with the Hurricanes trying to prove that
they are still relevant in the ACC. In the SEC, Georgia is at
Florida as the Gators play their first game since
losing at Auburn on October 14th. USC is at Oregon
State in a Pac-10 battle. The Trojans played three
close games in a row before their bye week, they
need a good showing to maintain their lofty number
three ranking in the AP. The BCS Standings are
also out with Ohio State, Michigan, USC, West
                                Virginia, Auburn, Florida, Texas, Louisville,
Notre Dame and California rounding out the top
                                10. For all College Football
