This is a rematch of a thrilling
game last year in Columbus, Ohio. Texas won in
comeback fashion, 25-22 for a win that eventually
helped them win the National Championship. Texas
no longer has Vince Young as a dual threat quarterback,
but red-shirt freshman, Colt McCoy showed that
he is a worthy replacement in a 56-7 win over
North Texas last week.
Ohio State quarterback Troy
Smith has a lot of the same skills as Young, albeit
on a smaller scale. Smith is also a senior who
provides veteran leadership, and he will not be
intimidated playing in a hostile environment.
The Buckeyes handled Northern Illinois easily
last week, 35-12.
One late note in this game
is that Texas cornerback, Tarell Brown will not
play after being suspended for an incident over
the weekend. Look for Ohio State to try to take
some shots down the field early to take advantage
of his absence.
Elsewhere around this great
nation, #4 Notre Dame (-7.5) hosts #19 Penn State
after getting everything they could handle and
more from Georgia Tech last week.
A big story around the Irish
campus is the Heisman Trophy race. There is a
theory circulating that quarterback Brady Quinn
is going to win the award even if his final numbers
do not deserve it.
Of course, Notre Dame has
bigger worries on their hands like figuring out
how to stop Penn State quarterback, Anthony Morelli
and their underrated offense. Each team is 1-0
on the year.
Turning our attention to
the ACC, #18 Clemson (-2.5) travels to Boston
College. It is still strange to think of the Eagles
in their new conference. It is also strange that
there have been such quality ACC games so early
in the season. Last week, Florida State beat Miami
in a game with huge consequences.
There are very high expectations
this year for Clemson, and they deserve to be
a slight road favorite. Boston College held off
Central Michigan last week, 31-24. Clemson pounded
Florida Atlantic, 54-6.
Looking out West, #20 Oregon
(-3.5) plays at Fresno State. Fresno State has
been a certified giant-killer over the years,
and no one wants to play them, especially at home.
They lost 30-27 last year at Oregon, but this
Ducks team is not as good as last year’s
version, and a minor upset is a good possibility.
There are plenty of more
exciting games all day Saturday, although clearly
the 8:00 p.m. EST kickoff of OSU and Texas is
what is capturing most people’s attention.
