NFL
Early Odds - December 26, 2006

5) Carolina (+3) at New Orleans
Carolina is 7-8 after a 10-3
victory at Atlanta. The win broke their four game
losing streak, and it is incredible that the Panthers
won the game with only 32 yards passing from Chris
Weinke. Carolina is still alive for the NFC Wild
Card although they must win this game and hope
the Giants and Green Bay both lose.
New Orleans is 10-5
after a 30-7 win at the Giants. It was a huge
win for the franchise as they are now the number
two seed in the NFC after Dallas lost to Philadelphia
last night. That means a bye-week followed by
a home playoff game, a tremendous advantage to
have in the post-season. Week
17 NFL Point Spread Panthers +3
4) NY Giants (-2.5) at Washington
This is the Saturday night
game on the NFL Network, and it has value because
the Giants (7-8) will almost definitely make the
playoffs if they get a win. That is incredible
as they are not only under .500, but they have
lost six out of their last seven games. Not exactly
how you should be playing heading into the playoffs.
Washington (5-10) is
only playing for pride at this point, but they
have played hard the last few weeks, and a Joe
Gibbs coached team will not lay down and die.
Add in the fact that the Giants are their hated
rival, and the home crowd would love nothing more
than to send the Giants packing for the winter.
Week 17 NFL Point
Spread Giants -2.5
3) Pittsburgh (+6) at Cincinnati
Pittsburgh (7-8) blew whatever
shot they had to make the playoffs with a blowout
home loss to Baltimore. It was a frustrating ending
to a frustrating season for the defending World
Champions, but its shows why it is so hard to
repeat in this league. The Steelers will still
give a good effort this week as that is their
modus operandi.
The entire city of Cincinnati
is still in mourning after a botched extra point
attempt gave the Bengals a 24-23 loss at Denver.
Cincinnati (8-7) can still make the playoffs with
a win and a Jets loss. That is the easiest scenario,
and would give the Bengals their first back-to-back
appearances in the playoffs since 1981-1982. Week
17 NFL Point Spread Steelers +6
2) Jacksonville (+3) at Kansas
City
This game is interesting
as two 8-7 teams are still alive for the playoffs
with the loser certainly eliminated. The bad news
for the winner is they will still not likely make
the post-season. Jacksonville is coming off a
devastating 24-21 loss to New England. It was
only the Jaguars second home loss of the season.
Kansas City ended a three
game losing streak with a Saturday night win at
Oakland. The Raiders may be the worst team in
the NFL, but it fortunately still counts as a
win. The Chiefs lost their last home game to Baltimore
three weeks ago, but they are still one of the
most dominant (5-2) home teams out there.
Week 17 NFL Point Spread Jaguars +3
1) Atlanta (+7.5) at Philadelphia
Atlanta is 7-8 after their
Carolina loss. This is not a team that deserves
to make the playoffs, and their chances are remote
even if they win this week. There is a chance
that Jim Mora is coaching his last game with the
team, especially after his recent comments about
wanting to coach at the University of Washington,
his Alma Mater.
Philadelphia is 9-6
after their stunning 23-7 win at Dallas on Monday
Night Football. The Eagles have clinched a playoff
spot, and will win the NFC East over Dallas by
winning this week. This is a team that is playing
inspired football with quarterback Jeff Garcia,
and they can make some noise in the post-season.
Week 17 NFL Point Spread Falcons +7.5
