The
Cover Corner - November 30, 2006
by: VIP.com
By Michael Licalsi:
The Cover Corner column was all ready to put down
a 4-2 mark last week, when the New York Giants
decided to blow a 21-0 fourth quarter lead. That
leaves the year-to-date mark at 20-24, heading
into another great week of college and NFL games.
Editor’s Note:
The selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
parties.
Wake Forest (+2.5) vs. Georgia
Tech
This ACC championship showdown
might not have the big name schools that we are
used to seeing like Miami, Florida State and Virginia
Tech, but it is still a heck of a match-up.
Wake Forest (10-2, 6-2 ACC
Atlantic) set a school record this year in wins.
If they can beat Georgia Tech in this ACC championship
game, it will be their first conference title
since 1970. It will also earn them a trip to the
Orange Bowl.
Despite all these potential
historic achievements, I have some problems with
Wake in this game. The issue I have with the Demon
Deacons is their 99th ranking in the country in
total offense. That has limited the amount of
points they put on the board, going over 30 just
twice this year.
Georgia Tech (9-3, 7-1 ACC
Coastal) is ranked 77th in total offense and,
20th in total defense (Wake is 42nd on defense).
While neither team has a great passing attack,
the Yellow Jackets have a senior in Reggie Ball
who is capable of converting first downs with
his arm or his legs.
In receiver Calvin Johnson,
Georgia Tech may have the most talented player
in the country, at any position.
In my opinion, Georgia Tech
just has a little more talent on both sides of
the ball than Wake Forest. The old adage goes
that, “nothing lasts forever,” and
the great season the Demon Deacons are having
will have a little less shine come sometime on
Saturday afternoon.
Pick: Georgia Tech
Nebraska (+3.5) vs. Oklahoma
Oklahoma (10-2, 7-1 Big 12
South) is going for their 8th straight win, and
they are a surprising participant in the Big 12
championship game as Texas was expected to be
here.
Nebraska (9-3, 6-2 Big 12
North) had two of their three losses to Big 12
South teams, Texas and Oklahoma State. Their other
loss was at USC, a potential national champion.
The Cornhuskers nearly pulled
off the upset against Texas, but that game was
in Lincoln. Nebraska has the more explosive offense
with quarterback Zac Taylor, and Oklahoma is hurt
by the fact that running back Adrian Peterson
will not be able to return to this game from his
broken collarbone.
However, the Sooners are
by far the better defensive team, and I’ll
always take a great defense over a very good offense.
Pick Oklahoma
