VIP.com examines the updated
BCS Championship race. Ohio State’s 42-39
win over Michigan put the Buckeyes in the national
title game, but the other team is still up in
the air. That is putting the whole college football
world on the edge of their seats.
Please note that neither
Michigan nor Ohio State will play another game
until their Bowl contest, so all they can do is
sit back and wait.
Odds to win the BCS Championship
are in parenthesis.
Ohio State, 12-0 (1:2)
Ohio State can start booking
their trip to Glendale, Arizona as they are headed
to the national championship game. The Buckeyes
were certainly fortunate that the Michigan game
was played at home, but they have been the best
team in college football all year, and they certainly
deserve their fate.
One potential worry with
Ohio State is they will have had seven weeks off
between games, and there is always the worry of
rust.
Michigan, 11-1 (6:1)
Michigan has remained at
second in the BCS Standings with a .926 average.
That is ever so slightly ahead of USC at .919.
There is a very good chance that USC will overtake
the Wolverines if they win their final two games
against Notre Dame and UCLA (6-5). If Michigan
does not make it to the BCS Championship game,
they will likely find themselves in the Rose Bowl.
Florida, 10-1 (15:1)
Florida is ranked 4th in
the BCS Standings with a .884 average. The Gators
are coming off a 62-0 win over Division 1-AA Western
Carolina. While that win did not do much to impress
the voters, the Gators were due for an easy game
after playing in the tough SEC conference.
Florida plays a fairly difficult
non-conference foe this week at Florida State
(6-5). The Seminoles have certainly struggled
this year, but they would love to ruin the season
of their intrastate rivals. The Gators will also
play Arkansas in the SEC Championship game. If
Florida wins out, and USC loses a game, the Gators
have a decent chance to overtake Michigan and
play in the national championship game.
Notre Dame, 10-1 (18:1)
Notre Dame is ranked 5th
in the BCS Standings with a .820 average. Their
final game is at USC, and while a win will move
them ahead of the Trojans, they probably can’t
get past Michigan.
That is because the Wolverines
beat the Irish, 47-21 in South Bend back in September.
It is unlikely that the voters
will place Notre Dame above a team that crushed
them at home, which means that Notre Dame’s
championship hopes are remote.
The Field (15:4)
USC (9-1) is still in “The
Field” category, and as mentioned above,
they are likely in the national championship game
if they can beat Notre Dame and UCLA.
Arkansas (10-1) is 6th in
the BCS Standings with a .807 average. Even if
they beat LSU, and then Florida in the SEC championship
game, it is unlikely they can pass Michigan.
One final note is that
Rutgers (9-1) title dreams are over now that they
lost last week at Cincinnati, 30-11.
