                                Madness - November 03, 2006 by: VIP.com Michael Robinson’s
look at the college weekend: The best game of
the week may have been last night’s Louisville
win over West Virginia, but that does not mean
we should switch over to log rolling or ping pong
programming. In fact, it is quite the contrary. We start off in Madison,
Wisconsin where Penn State comes to town to face
the 17th ranked Badgers. 99% of the Big 10 press this
year has focused on Ohio State and Michigan, and
rightfully so. Those are the two best teams in
the country, and one is likely to end up in the
national championship game after their grudge
match on November 18th. Falling right behind those
teams is Wisconsin and Penn State. The Badgers
(8-1, 5-1 Big 10) had their only loss at Michigan.
That game was a hard fought battle and was competitive
into the 4th quarter. The Badgers have been all
about defense under first year coach, Bret Bielema.
Bielema has built a faster defense than we were
used to seeing under Barry Alvarez, and they are
surrendering under 13 points per game. The defense did slip a bit
last week giving up 24 points to Illinois. That
was only the second time they have given up more
than 17 points in a game. The offense is led by their
usual huge offensive line, a savvy senior quarterback
in John Stocco, and a red-shirt freshman running
back in P.J Hill. Hill is likely to play against
Penn State despite suffering neck and ankle injuries
last week. Penn State is not making
anyone forget last year’s 11-1 squad, but
they are 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 10. The 2006 team had to replace
several key starters including quarterback Michael
Robinson (no relation to this columnist). After
earlier losses to Notre Dame and Ohio State, this
team seems to have found a groove in winning four
of their last five. Their only loss in that span
was to Michigan. Spurring the recent charge
has been an improved defense led by linebacker
Paul Posluszny. He is joined by Dan Connor in
what is the best linebacker combination in the
country. The key to this game for
Penn State is the composure of junior quarterback
Anthony Morelli. In their three losses against
that great competition, he has one touchdown versus
four interceptions. In their six wins, he has
six touchdowns versus two picks. While the Badgers
may be a step down from the elite teams in the
nation, it is not a giant step. Wisconsin is favored by seven
points over Penn State on Saturday. Other games to keep an eye on
this week are: Boston College (-3.5) at
Wake Forest Ohio State (-24) at Illinois Oklahoma (-2.5) at Texas
A&M LSU (-3.5) at Tennessee Arkansas (-2.5) at South
Carolina Virginia Tech (-2.5) at Miami UCLA (+17) at California For all College Football
