BCS Championship - October 31, 2006

Odds to win the BCS Championship
are in parenthesis.
Ohio State, 9-0 (4:6)
Ohio State just came off
a 44-0 trouncing of Minnesota, and now have road
games at Illinois and Northwestern. While Big
10 road games are always fraught with peril, and
Illinois almost won at Wisconsin last week, you
can pencil in two more wins. That leaves Ohio
State’s November 18th home game with Michigan
for a BCS title game bid.
Michigan, 9-0 (9:2)
Michigan is 2nd in the BCS
Standings behind Ohio State and has easy competition
the next two weeks, home against non-conference
Ball State, and at Indiana. Like the Buckeyes,
the Wolverines just need to take care of business
before their big battle in Columbus.
West Virginia, 7-0 (13:2)
Just like Michigan and Ohio
State control their own destiny, so does West
Virginia. The Mountaineers are ranked 3rd in the
BCS, and if they can win their last five contests,
they should be in the championship game. Their
first big test is this Thursday at Louisville,
but there are other tough games remaining including
a season finale against Rutgers (8-0).
Louisville, 7-0 (12:1)
Louisville is another undefeated
team from the Big East, but they are ranked 5th
in the BCS standings, right behind Florida (7-1).
If Louisville can beat West Virginia on Thursday,
and then win at Rutgers the following week, they
could leapfrog Florida and eventually play in
the national title game if they stay undefeated.
Texas 8-1 (12:1)
Texas has struggled the last
couple of weeks even though they won road games
at Nebraska and Texas Tech. While they have a
very good chance to win their last three games,
and win the Big 12 championship, their 7th spot
in the BCS standings makes these 12:1 odds slightly
optimistic.
Florida, 7-1 (25:1)
As mentioned, Florida is
ranked 4th in the BCS standings over Louisville.
A big part of the reason is the tough schedule
in the SEC. The Gators have gone through the hardest
part of their schedule, and they could go undefeated
through the SEC championship game. Given that
scenario, these odds look like a good value at
25:1.
Auburn, 8-1 (25:1)
Auburn is not too happy they
are 6th in the BCS standings, and behind Florida,
even though Auburn beat them, 27-17. Auburn needs
Arkansas to start losing if they hope to even
make the SEC championship game, and they need
to keep winning tough games, including at Alabama
the last game of the year.
Tennessee, 7-1 (25:1)
Tennessee is another SEC
team, and they are a long-shot for a BCS championship
bid for a couple of reasons. 1) They already lost
to Florida. 2) They are 11th in the BCS standings.
Even if the Volunteers win their last four games,
they still might not make the SEC championship
game.
Notre Dame, 7-1 (30:1)
Notre Dame and Coach Charlie
Weis are not happy they rank 9th in the BCS standings.
But when you get blown out at home by Michigan,
and barely win against Michigan State and UCLA,
that happens. The Irish have three easy games
left and then a trip to USC, but even going 4-0
might not be enough for America’s glamour
program.
The Field (30:1)
USC (6-1) has dropped
into “The Field” category after their
loss at Oregon State. The Trojans still have four
tough games remaining with Oregon, California,
Notre Dame and UCLA. Even in the unlikely scenario
they win all four of those, they would still have
to leapfrog a bunch of teams as they are 8th in
the BCS standings.
