By Michael Licalsi: The Baylor
Bears have been at the bottom of the Big 12 conference
for years. This year, the tide is starting to
turn, and there may be a tidal wave in Waco, Texas
if they can take care of business this week against
rival, Texas A&M.
Editor’s Note:
The selections in this column are purely the opinion
of the writer, and are not being endorsed by any
or all parties.
Texas A&M (-4.5)
at Baylor
Both teams are playing for
sole possession of second place in the Big 12's
South division, one game behind the Texas Longhorns.
Texas A&M (7-1, 3-1 Big
12) has won three straight games by a combined
total of 10 points. Those victories were at Kansas
(21-18), home to Missouri (25-19), and at Oklahoma
State (34-33).
Baylor is only 4-4 on the
year, but their 3-1 record in the Big 12 is more
conference wins than the school has had since
the 1996 campaign. They have also won three of
their last four games.
Last week, Baylor was down
18 points and pulled off the largest fourth-quarter
comeback in team history to beat Kansas, 36-35.
That showed a lot of heart.
The Bears’ offense
is led by a passing attack that is ranked 4th
in the country. Quarterback, Shawn Bell has thrown
for over 2,300 yards this year and is ranked number
one in the nation for career interception percentage
(minimum 500 pass attempts).
On the negative side, their
weakness is a running game that is one of the
worst in Division 1-A.
Summary and Outlook
Texas A&M is 10-25-1
against the spread (ATS) in their last 36 road
games, and 9-21-1 ATS after a straight up win.
Yes, they beat Oklahoma State last week, but they
gave up 33 points, and now have to play their
second consecutive road game.
Baylor, on the other hand,
is on a great run right now. They believe in their
coach, Guy Morriss, who has re-established Baylor
football and even has his team thinking Bowl game.
Sports fans, I see an Aggies
team that is coming in overconfident and complacent
after a win. Baylor is a good value as a home
underdog as they look for revenge against a program
that has dominated them over the years.
I would not be shocked if
Baylor wins this game straight up.
Pick: Baylor
