Oregon State crushed Eastern
Washington 56-17, while Boise State thrashed Sacramento
State 45-0. Both of those opponents were from
Division I-AA.
The key to tonight’s
contest could be Boise State’s ability to
shut down OSU’s exciting running back, Yvenson
Bernard. Bernard produced his best season last
year, with 1,321 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
He added another two scores and 124 yards against
Eastern Washington in a promising start to the
new season, and he will be a handful if given
room to run.
However, Boise State has
a defense capable of coping with Bernard. They
have won the last four Western Athletic Conference
titles, and are hot favorites to make it five
straight this year.
The Broncos have a new coach,
with Chris Peterson replacing the highly successful
Dan Hawkins, who has moved to Colorado. Peterson
was the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in
recent years, and with the team scoring more points
than any other in the WAC year after year, his
appointment came as no surprise.
Boise State will again be
strong, with 18 starters returning this season.
Quarterback, Jared Zabransky wasn’t at his
best last season, but returns in the playmaking
role and is still regarded among the premier signal
callers in the WAC.
Zabransky started well against
Sacramento State, throwing for two touchdowns
and running in another. Last week’s performance
will give him considerable confidence coming into
this clash, which will prove much more of a challenge.
Zabransky’s favorite
target is wide receiver, Drisan James and the
pair combined for a slick 52-yard touchdown last
week. That is sure to be the first of many they
will produce over the coming weeks.
Oregon State’s signal
caller is former UCLA quarterback Matt Moore,
who struggled at times last year as OSU finished
with a disappointing 5-6 record. Like Zabransky,
Moore got off to a good start last week, throwing
for 88 yards and two touchdowns in the rout, before
giving way to backup Sean Canfield.
There are fears within the
Beavers’ camp that they could struggle to
match their modest win total from last year following
the loss of the dependable Mike Hass. Hass is
the school’s all time leading receiver.
Oregon State did get a boost
against Eastern Washington from the successful
return of tight end Joe Newton. After missing
much of last year with a leg injury, Newton celebrated
his return with a touchdown and several strong
bursts.
Summary: Boise State lost
at Oregon State, 30-27 last year, and beat them
53-34 at home in 2004. This year, Boise State
appears to have the better balance to their squad,
and should out-last the Beavers over the four
quarters at home.
