THE GRIDIRON - COLLEGE BOWL PREVIEWs - December

Sports Edge’s
capsules on today’s college football bowl
games. There are five games today, three on Saturday,
and one on Sunday. Then we have New Years Day
and the start of the BCS Bowls, including Michigan
(+1) against USC in the Rose Bowl.
Kentucky (+10) Clemson
This Music City Bowl game
is being played today at 1:00 p.m. EST on ESPN.
The spread in this game has stayed even at 10
points.
Clemson (8-4) has to be wondering
how they fell down to this Bowl game after starting
the season at 7-1, and looking like one of the
best teams in the entire nation. Since that hot
start, the Tigers have dropped three of their
last four games. Clemson needs to get their running
game going at maximum speed with the talented
duo of James Davis and C.J. Spiller.
Kentucky is 7-5, but has
won four of their last five games. The Wildcats
should be able to put some points on the board
with the improving Andre’ Woodson at quarterback.
If they can slow down the Clemson run, they will
be able to pressure and defend a very average
Clemson pass offense.
Missouri (+3.5) Oregon State
This Sun Bowl game is being
played today at 2:00 p.m. EST on CBS. The spread
in this game has remained at 3.5 points.
Missouri is 8-4, but they
did not play their best football down the stretch,
losing four of their last six games. Missouri
was led by a surprising pass attack with quarterback
Chase Daniel. He threw for 3,197 yards and 26
touchdowns in his sophomore campaign.
Oregon State (9-4) came on
strong at the end of the season after starting
off 2-3. Their big win was over the USC Trojans,
who were undefeated at that time. The Beavers
will use their attacking defense to force Daniel
into some easy turnovers, while hoping that senior
quarterback Matt Moore, provides a steady hand.
Houston (+5.5) South Carolina
This Liberty Bowl game is
being played today at 4:30 p.m. EST on ESPN. The
spread in this game has decreased from 6.5 points
to 5.5.
Houston comes into this game
with a 10-3 record and South Carolina is 7-5.
However, the Gamecocks are the significantly favored
team. That is what happens when one team is from
the powerful SEC and the other from Conference
USA.
South Carolina coach, Steve
Spurrier was known for his high-flying passing
attack when he was at Florida, but it is Houston
and Kevin Kolb who can really sling it in this
game. Kolb has 27 touchdowns versus three interceptions,
but Spurrier is sure to have his defense prepared.
Minnesota (+7) Texas Tech
This Insight Bowl game is
being played today at 7:30 p.m. EST on the NFL
Network. The spread in this game has stayed even
at seven points.
Texas Tech is 7-5 out of
the Big 12. Led by Graham Harrell, they are 3rd
in the nation in passing yardage, while Minnesota
(6-6) is 115th in pass defense. That means the
Red Raiders will be throwing early and often,
and Minnesota will need to play one of their best
games of the year to stay in this one.
Purdue (E) Maryland
This Citrus Bowl game is
being played today at 8:00 p.m. EST on ESPN. The
spread in this game has decreased from Maryland
(-2) to Even.
This Big 10 and ACC
match-up features Purdue (8-5) and their potent
passing attack led by Curtis Painter. Both defenses
are nothing to write home about, and Maryland’s
(8-4) offense has also been inconsistent all year.
The Terrapins ride a two game losing streak into
this game after blowing a chance at the ACC title.
