NFL
Rewind - December 18, 2006

By Michael Robinson: Another
week of the NFL season is in the books (except
for the Monday Night game), but the playoff picture
is still pretty muddled. Half of the eight division
crowns are up for grabs, and all the Wild Card
spots are still anybody’s guess.
One piece of the puzzle that
cleared up was Chicago (12-2) earning home field
advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a 34-31
overtime win over Tampa Bay (3-11). The game was
certainly not supposed to be that close, but the
Bears are happy to get the win either way.
It will be interesting to
see how much Chicago rests their starters over
the next couple of weeks.
New Orleans (9-5) still has
control of the second seed in the NFC even after
inexplicably losing, 16-10 at home to Washington
(5-9). Dallas is 9-5 as well, but they lost the
head-to-head meeting with the Saints. New Orleans
has a tough game at the Giants next week, while
Dallas is home to the Eagles.
Speaking of the Giants and
Eagles, they met at the Meadowlands yesterday
with Philadelphia winning a stunner, 36-22. They
improve to 8-6 with New York dropping to 7-7.
The Eagles are now in control of one NFC Wild
Card spot, with the other being a tie between
the Giants and Atlanta.
San Diego (12-2) stayed in
control of the AFC with a 20-9 win over Kansas
City (7-7).
The Chargers will get home
field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs if
they win their final two games versus Seattle
and Arizona.
The Chargers are one game
ahead of Baltimore (11-3) who won 27-17 over Cleveland
(4-10). Baltimore is battling Indianapolis (10-3)
for the second seed in the AFC, and Indianapolis
(-3) hosts Cincinnati tonight on MNF.
The Patriots (10-4) are the
quietest double-digit win team in the NFL. They
beat a hapless Houston (4-10) squad, 40-7. The
incredible part of that game was the Patriots
only had 230 yards of total offense, with many
of the points coming as the result of four Texans’
turnovers.
The Patriots have a two game
lead over the Jets in the AFC East. The Jets had
an impressive 26-13 win at Minnesota (6-8), and
they are tied at 8-6 with Denver and Jacksonville
for the final AFC Wild Card spot. Denver won 37-20
at Arizona (5-9), while Jacksonville’s four
turnovers caused them to lose 24-17 at Tennessee
(7-7).
A Cincinnati win tonight
will put them in the AFC Wild Card lead at 9-5,
another reason the game is a must-watch.
Overall, the favorites
were 7-8 heading into tonight’s game.
